I'm looking for animals to make a 15-18mm VSF Venusian lizardman army more interesting, some sorts of creatures that are dinosaur-like but not "authentic", recognizable dinosaurs as such. I'm thinking of two types of creatures especially: First, something analogous to a war elephant (meaning, capable of carrying a howdah) that also looks tough and survivable (maybe along the lines of an ankylosaurus, or indeed the Armadillo Beast from Heavy Gear Blitz but somewhat bigger). Second, something similar to the Salamander from Warhammer (a big but not huge creature that has the appearance of being able to spit fire or venom).

Creatures that resemble turtles, frogs and the like could work just as well. Even arthropods like crabs, lobsters and trilobites (but not scorpions, they're a bit too far from what I have in mind).

I'm quite prepared to do some converting, especially simpler operations like head swaps and the addition of howdahs.

Has anyone gone down this route already, particularly in regard to 15-18mm lizardman armies for VSF or fantasy?

Not sure if the Bastildon is too big for you (or too expensive)

Tamiya has some 1/35 scale models that you can kitbash into different creatures.

The Bastiladon is cool, but too big. Thanks, though.

Why not creatively adapt real dinos? Saw the plates off a steg, then dress up an allosaur, swap an ankylosaurus tail onto a brontosaur (showing my age here) and add a carnosaur head, and so on?

Converting ordinary dinos is something I'm certainly thinking about. I still have some of the old single-pose plastic GW Skinks and I think their heads look very suitable as those of some funky species of fire/venom/acid-spitting lizard. It would only be a matter of finding suitable dinosaur bodies of the right size… or even wingless dragon bodies, if they look the part.

I'm also reconsidering the DP9 Armadillo Beast (however steep the price) as some sort of single-rider shock cavalry sans howdah. The ideal howdah-carrying creature I want would be just about halfway between the Armadillo Beast and the GW Bastiladon in size, and similar to both of those in appearance, but beggars can't be choosers.

The old I-Kore Viridian Terrasaurs might possibly suit me (some even come with howdahs), although I don't care for the hideously bulging bellies:

What about something like Dark Sword's Highland Hunting Dragon?

It is intended for 28mm, but quite small for a dragon.

Would this be of any use? From 15mm.co.uk

Black Hat has an "octosaur" with howdah in their Martian Empires range:

Crud somehow that item has the wrong picture. It should look like this (you can also buy a separate critter):

Thanks for all the great suggestions! Now to ruminate…

Honestly, a lot of kids toy dinosaurs don't really bear much resemblance to any real dinosaur so maybe swing by the toy store and take a look?

I just picked up a box of the Tamiya 1/35 raptors to use for 28mm VSF/Gaslight games. A bit on the big side maybe, but I want the players to have to work a bit :-)

A bit on the big side maybe…

I remember when the first Jurassic Park came out, and there was some squabbling about the raptors portrayed being oversized. Then there was an announcement of newly discovered mega-raptor.

Production guys claimed a whole lot of last laughs.

Lots of surprises left in the fossil record. Now they're claiming Spinosaurus was mostly a fish eater…

There are a couple of lizard-like models in the Celtos range:

They can be bought without the riders – you'd have to remove/adapt the saddle on the Sidge dragons, but the Blood Reaver comes without saddle.

Wow – I'm also looking for a Triceratops-like dinosaur for my game. It's based on 15mm figures. I'm going to give it to the Orcs to break down castle walls and storming a town. It would have a howda with 3-4 archers. The figure above is perfect, but I also like the idea of plastic dinosaurs and making my own howda out of balsa wood.
