Im looking for a book in the western front, that both give a strategic view, and personal accounts of trench warfare anf going into to mans land. It can be centerd on one battle/offencive. Obe that deal wuth both sides of the tenches. But can be more about the tripple alliance.

The Kaiser's Battle. By Keegan I think?

Martin Rapier20 Jan 2015 12:15 a.m. PST

Anything by Jack Sheldon? The Somme through German Eyes is particularly fine.

Two excellent books, both of which I recommend very highly -

"Storm of Steel" – by Ernst Junger
Firsthand real deal account. Pulls no punches and is very well written. You may be able to find this available for free D/L on the web.

"First Day on the Somme" – by Martin Middlebrook
Written in the 60's IIRC and is fundamentally a compendium of scores of personal interviews and correspondence exchanges Middlebrooks conducted with surviving British and German participants in the battle. Read this book and you will wonder what all the excitement was about in connection with Keegan's "Face of Battle" 20 years later. I consider Middlebrook's work much superior.

"The Kaiser's Battle. By Keegan I think?"

Actually by Martin Middlebrook. Good book as well.
