I started painting a brigadier General( 0r Austrian Equivalent) and just wondering what shade of grey I should use for his overcoat. I have painted it quite a dark shade of grey going towards the black end of the spectrum very much like the infantry officers overcoat , but since I have seen one picture with a much lighter grey. Can any one suggest the grey I should be using and also should the cuffs be red edged with gold or just left plain. I appear to be short of reference pictures for officers wearing overcoats . Cheers guys |

According to Rawkins (The Austro-Hungarian Army 1798-1814) greatcoats for general officers "were of the cavalry pattern and were dark grey with Swedish collars and cuffs of scarlet with gold lace trim and gilt buttons." (Elsewhere, he describes cavalry greatcoats as being "voluminous with a high vent at the rear and deep-turned back cuffs" so I imagine this is the pattern to which he is referring). |

Thanks. I will probably play safe here and repaint it in a medium grey. |
