Comments or corrections?

My group of gamers is embarking on a big campaign, and we're looking for a website that would enable posting comments and uploading/downloading files of interest. Either FaceBook or Yahoo Groups would meet this criteria, except not all the players have FB, and Yahoo Groups doesn't work well if all the players don't have a Yahoo account.

Any other suggestions?

Since yahoo accounts are free and easy and the Yahoo Groups works exactly the way you are looking for, TBH, it's not that hard to get a yahoo account, especially since they are free!

Murphy has it right.

Any site you use will require getting an account or it will be overrun by smap bots in a day. I opened a forum and before I had announced it anywhere was getting dozens of spam postings every day.

I use Wordpress.

You can choose whether or not to to allow a free for all in terms of posting, restrict it to known posters, and or gift known people admin rights to post stuff.

It's caught 99% of the spam I get, whilst allowing my mates ability to post their stuff.

You can also distinguish been Posts, Pages and Comments.

All of it can be tagged toi allow you to display certain subjects/contents depending upon what you want.
It has options for private material as well.

Plus it has the flexibility to host your own domain names as oppossed to WP's generic URL names.

Giles.

You can look into Trello – it's more of a project management site, but you can use the front page for announcements, and sub pages for specific info. Create an account and share the password with your co-conspirators so everyone has access.

Very helpful thanks, I'll check out those suggestions. I have used Yahoo Groups often, and it is very functional (love the poll features etc), but if you do not have a Yahoo-based account, the reliability drops way off. Thanks all!

Regarding Wordpress, is there a way to upload files (i.e. jpg, pdf) so they are accessible to users? Would you create a page on a blog to do that? Thanks in advance.

TMPWargamerabbit20 Jan 2015 12:24 p.m. PST

Wordpress has ability to have uploaded files and public access if the actual blog site is open for general public viewing like many blogger sites. My WP warren is loaded with files and I have many links to external sites and YouTube embedded in the WP blog Posts and indexing Pages.
If going with a blog site format (Wordpress, blogger etc)…may I suggest a "dry run" period of time before you actually need the blog to function. You will need a period of tinkering and designing how you wish the material and information presented. Wordpress generally is easy to work with after you have a good understanding of the blog posting and site formatting. Know the differences and abilities to cross or index: Posts, Category, Pages, Headers, and other key terms from the Wordpress help and design sections. Will save you time and effort down the blog trail. The correct "Theme" is your important first choice. Theme are the "backbone" of the blog site formatting and capabilities. WP gives a free 3GB data space… additional data space cost a small yearly fee (I have 13G for $20 USD/yr fee (3GB free plus 10GB extra).

Hi Tuscaloosa,

There is a flash widget by Box that you can use in Wordpress where people can upload and download stuff. It works well.

I have it on my blog in the side bar.

Aha, thank you.

If you are going to look at Wordpress, you may also want to try Weebly.com, which I've used for free hosting of our club website in Vancouver at trumpetersociey.com. It is easy to use and does not inflict any advertising on visitors.
Good luck with your project.

Heh, wordpress is a good idea that I hadn't considered using for my campaign. I'll give it a go with a separate site for each campaign.

Cheers
