I have a couple of battalions of the 13th Grenzer Regt. Wallachia-Illyria to paint and was wondering if anyone out there knew of battalion distinctions (if any). They are 1/72 plastic figures so tiny details don't appear. |

According to my sources the collar, Hungarian style cuffs and turnbacks were a "light pike grey." I have another incredible resource but it is in Italian. It agrees with the light grey description but I also think that this resource is saying that the regt was in the standard white uniform (Hungarian trousers) until 1814 but then it had the brown jacket. That said, all sources I have say the Grenzer bns usually had both (regulation white service jacket and then the Hausmontur i.e. frontier service dress). So I say just pick your choice. All of my grenzers are in brown because I think they look good and I tire of painting white. |

Great link and resourse. I have saved it to my favorites. I didn't see anything about Grenzers though. Did I miss something? |

you must go to the end of the article and the right hand side is a tiny window with more on Austrian army, there you can see lots and lots more link |

Thanks for the interest gents. von Winterfeldt that is an amazing site. Going to have to read my way through it. Didn't immediately find what I'm after but the change in Grenz facing colours is interesting, so I think I'll use that; with the 1st battalion having the new colour and the second, the old. I'm not really squeezed into any particular time frame so should do for my purposes. Thanks again. |

So, on a related question, which brown does everyone favor for their Grenzer jackets? |

Whilst havn't painted any Grenzer infantry as yet I would be tempted to paint them a little darker than say the Artillery Jackets. In GW parlance I would paint them in Bestial Brown. Grenzer troops are another reason I think an Austrian Army can be very colourful and not all white which is almost something of a stereo type image most people have :) |

My grenzers are also Wallach-Illyria No. 13. My blog post includes info on the regiment's colour changes and my paint colour choices: link The following blog post shows the figures based. |
