What rules are everyone using for their naval battles? And in what scale? And where do people get their ships from? I'm very new to all this!

What type galleys (ancient or renaissance)? What scale ships are you interested in? 1/600, 1/300, 1/1200, 28mm? These answers will help us help you.

I'm interested in ancient naval warfare. Greeks, Persians, Romans et al. I don't really have much of a preference for scale, but I'd prefer a ruleset that is flexible when it comes to scale. Probably 1/300 sounds like a good size for me. I want figures big enough to look nice on the tabletop.

Check out Roman Seas.

Roman Seas is an awesome game, but a couple of the rules require interpreting.

For a faster game with less bookkeeping find yourself a copy of the old Battleline/AH Trireme. There are some other rules out there that are good – personally I didn't care for any of the free ones, though – not enough detail and some of the rules didn't make sense/seem to be thought through.

For 1/300, Roman Seas seems to be popular. As a youth, I played ruleset found in one of the chapter's of Paul Hague's Naval Wargaming in Miniature. A tad dated, it is still a good set. I would also look to see if David Manley has any ancients naval rulesets as well.

You could try out Corvus, from the Society of Ancients page:

I believe the game comes with card top views of the ships, to aid play.
