A lot of that has to be down to the level of loyalty he inspired in his subordinates – far in excess of anything that Lee or Gates could.

If the Conway Cabal had been competent enough to "overthrow" Washington, then we'd still be a British Colony or Commonwealth. So, no, I don't believe any of them were competent.
