It's still a WIP but here is a peek at the city terrain we're working on for our Pulp Alley games.

What a fun board to play on. Show the board with your vehicles…I see the driver in the corner, so know they're about somewhere. :-) |

Where did you get the sidewalks from? |
Borathan | 17 Jan 2015 2:45 p.m. PST |
It looks like the sidewalks and streets are the stick down floor tiles |

Boy, that's great, commercial district to the right, industrial to the left, and residential(?) toward the back. Beautiful work and thoughtfully put together. |

@ tberry – Yes, those are O scale streetlights. @ ordinarybass – There are lots more photos in this AAR – TMP link @ Murphy – Dad made the sidewalks from gray vinyl floor tiles. Thanks for all the comments. I'm glad you like it. More to come. -Mila Pulp Alley

Love the board. Was considering doing something similar for superhero gaming. Based on the above comments, would I be right in thinking that both the road surface and pavements/sidewalks are self-adhesive vinyl floor tiles? Have been eyeing these up in my local discount home store (B&M in the UK), as at £1.99 GBP for seven 30cm/12" tiles, this would be a cheaper alternative to the Mars Attacks 2' square deluxe gaming mat (although at £14.99 GBP, it ain't that bad…) What size is the overall board and what's the base layer? Hardboard, MDF, etc. Thanks |

@ Carrion Crow – Yes, the road layer is simply self-adhesive vinyl tiles – with nothing done to them. Each tile is 18"x18" so 4 of them is perfect for our 3' table. The sidewalk layer is also vinyl tiles (not self-adhesive). These were cut and scored (1" squares) and then Dad sands the top to give it a "used" look. The sidewalks and buildings are not glued down so we can shift them around to make different arrangements. Dad's latest project is adding a roof to this building. He's talking about putting a watertower and billboard on top of it as well, but he might get distracted by soemthing else before he gets that far.
This is the last of the Vice Alley buildings we have planned for now. So once it's finished we're off to another setting. |

@ Carrion --- There really isn't a base layer, unless you count the tabletop itself. I like to keep everything fairly modular. We normally play on a 3'x3' table. I should note that I've stuck two (8) self-adhesive tiles together back-to-back, so they can be flipped over for different settings. HAVE FUN

Ah, so if I understand correctly, the four 18" road tiles are in fact the base layer, within the 3' wooden frame, directly onto the tabletop, yes? Interesting… Whilst here in the UK we do have avenues for inexpensive self-adhesive vinyl tiles, in a similar colouration to the road tiles, they only appear to come in the standard 300mm/12" size. As my wife is not as…enthusiastic…about such pursuits, I was trying to come up with a modular gaming surface that could be got out and whipped away quite quickly. My current musings, based on your admirable table, would be to use 500mm carpet tiles (which appear to be the standard size), top-side down to provide protection/cushioning for the surface beneath, with self-adhesive vinyl tiles applied to the underside (i.e. back) to provide the gaming surface. I was then considering adding an additonal layer of suitable SAVT as the pavements. Not as modular as your layout, but would hopefully end up similar to the promised Games & Gears Battleboards, but for a fraction of the cost. If I use green carpet tiles, then one of the tiles could be flipped to provide a grassy space/park within the city. Some sort of artist's portfolio case could then be used for storage and transportation… Thanks for the informative answers and inspiring board! |

The only point of caution -- always try to store your vinyl tiles on a surface that is as flat as possible. Over time, the tiles do tend to warp and take the shape of whatever is beneath them. And sometimes it take awhile to get them flat again. HAVE FUN Dave Pulp Alley |
