As I mentioned previously, we have been experimenting with banners from the Google Adsense service. We've collected enough information to base some decisions on, and have therefore terminated the banners for now. We may experiment with another service in the future. |

the problems going to be the relevancy of the ads. and the lack of clicks from them. unlike the ads at top of page which i frequently click on i would be very unlikely to hit any of the other stuff that was appearing. but you knew that already. |
Rebelyell2006 | 15 Jan 2015 10:08 p.m. PST |
People allegedly did click them, although Bill never stated how many per day. |
Pat Ripley | 15 Jan 2015 11:57 p.m. PST |
its probably good ettiquette to click on one to leave as adsense generates income for TMP everytime someone does |

Tank Top's account closed for using disposable email address. |

Glad the ads are gone for now. |
Earl of the North | 16 Jan 2015 8:21 a.m. PST |
Unlike the wargaming banner ads, I never clicked on a single add and I am glad to see the back of them. |

Why ban anybody, Bill? That seems to be a pretty lame reason. It seems like dissent wasn't enough and you needed an excuse. If you are going to rely on advertising revenue I would think that banning and locking would be counter productive. |

A high attrition rate on this topic. Doug |

Why ban anybody, Bill? That seems to be a pretty lame reason. It seems like dissent wasn't enough and you needed an excuse. No legitimate reason for a member to use a disposeable email address. Most accounts using disposeable emaill addresses are sock puppets. FlavianTemujin was also a sock puppet account, one of several by the same person. |

Why not keep the adverts on the left and bottom as they were but make them your own supporting members banners just like the top? Surely that would be better for those who are paying to advertise. |

Why not keep the adverts on the left and bottom as they were but make them your own supporting members banners just like the top? Surely that would be better for those who are paying to advertise. That wouldn't be relevant for TMP 4.0. |

Thank You. It was a terrible infringement on the "ambiance" of TMP. It was like visiting your cozy local bar and finding its been turned into a strip club. Also, I had an issue of being pulled out of here and getting whisked away to some kind of merchandizing site whenever I clicked on "American Gaming". I thing Suzanne Somers was selling something?? |

Bill, I use a disposable email address for TMP so I can filter any email to that address into a folder in my email account, and keep it separate from email from my main addresses. There is, therefore, a perfectly legitimate reason to use a disposable address if you're like me and have one main email account but a selection of forwarders and disposable addresses for filing purposes. The only indicator of being a sock puppet is to behave like a sock puppet. Ian |

I am glad they are gone but very sorry to see at least two members locked out or banned over comments here. |
Editor in Chief Bill | 17 Jan 2015 5:17 p.m. PST |
The only indicator of being a sock puppet is to behave like a sock puppet. Well, no… At this point, we have certain individuals who have been asked to leave TMP, who choose instead to set up multiple accounts so that they can interfere with the community. I use a disposable email address for TMP… No, you don't. I am referring to disposeable email addresses in the sense of "throwaway" accounts, which are typically valid for a very brief period of time. …very sorry to see at least two members locked out or banned over comments here. I'm fairly certain they have been locked out before, so this is no net increase in the numbers. |

So Very glad the banners/ads are gone, I try not too complain about much, but I just had to say something about the banners, their content was so out of context it was just a joke, thanks Bill for reconsidering… |
Fighting 15s | 17 Jan 2015 9:43 p.m. PST |
My email account for TMP is definitely a disposable address – I can get rid if it any time without consequence. Apart from, perhaps, the risk of being banned from TMP. The intention is, as with other temporary addresses I use, is that it can be dropped if it starts attracting spam, without affecting my main account. Of course, you may be at odds with how Yahoo or other email providers define disposable email addresses, but no one can guess from your usage of the term that you mean something so specific. |
StarfuryXL5 | 17 Jan 2015 11:01 p.m. PST |
A disposable address would also be a way to protect the privacy of your contact information. If, for instance, something you said is interpreted to be offensive, you might find your e-mail address served up on public display. Not a problem when you can just ditch that address. |

We've collected enough information to base some decisions on, and have therefore terminated the banners for now. We may experiment with another service in the future. I hope you find a service that can provide us with ads relevant to the war gaming community and provide you with more income…. So you can finally get the Cadillac CTS-V you've been looking at…. |

Is there a lit of email providers that are accepted and ones that are not? |
Disco Joe | 19 Jan 2015 5:21 p.m. PST |
Bill, I thought you stated that the experiment is over. I just went to the manufacturers directory and the ads are still there. When I picked what letter of the alphabet I wanted the page came up with the ads still on them. Did somebody forget something? |
Robert Kennedy | 19 Jan 2015 6:01 p.m. PST |
I went to the Manufacturers Directory and clicked on every letter and number and all the ads were all gaming related. |
Disco Joe | 19 Jan 2015 6:24 p.m. PST |
I got Barnes and Noble which really isn't game related. And the ad was at the left side of the page and at the bottom. |

My ads were all at the top and not at the side .As I mentioned all were gaming related so I guess being a Supporting member has its advantages. |
Disco Joe | 20 Jan 2015 7:22 a.m. PST |
No it is still happening and Robert they did say much earlier when it was happening across the whole site that it didn't' apply to supporting membership. |

You may not be aware of services that provide disposeable email addresses, in the sense that the accounts are only valid for a few days, then automatically discarded. |

It was the relevancy of the ads that annoyed me. If you can find something that does a better job of providing RELEVANT ads, I'm all for it. You deserve to make a profit from your hard work, and additional revenue streams are something you should definitely look into. |
