I want to label the bases for my 1914 French infantry (6mm figures for Great War Spearhead rules) and I'd like to know if the companies were identified by numbers or letters. (I think it was numbers, but I've misplaced my reference, hence the questions.) Also, were the companies identified sequentially throughout the regiment? (For example, if numerical designations, was the first battalion companies 1-4, second battalion co.s 5-8, and so on?) Any additional information regarding unit designations within the regiment will be appreciated. Thanks! |

According to the following site – sequentially throughout the regiment: link Lots of good info on that site. |

It is an excellent site. The key text is 'The battalions were numbered the 1st (1st-4th company), 2nd (5th-8th company) and 3rd (9th-12th company)'. German forces numbered their MG company as 13th Company but, like the British, the French machine guns were distributed by sections throughout a regiment. Robert |
