For newbies to this period is there an alternative to the Perry range?

Although I find Perry time consuming to paint and there are still significant gaps in there range I think they are the best on the market right now. Why don't you want to use Perry?

My Sudan collection is 15mm using mainly Essex and Old Glory 15s supplemented with some Peter Pig, Two Dragons and Minifigs. You can see them at warin15mm.com/The-Sudan.html

Assuming you are going for 28mm, I'd recommend taking a look at the Essex range. It is an old range (released in the early 80s, I think), but they have a ton of character and are a real pleasure to paint. They mix well with Britannia if you are looking for more variety.

The Bicorne are also very nice.

Great Endeavours produce the older but nice Ral Partha colonials figs. These are true 25mm figs, and the line is extensive.

I have a bunch of marines for this period if there is any interest.

I'm a big fan of the Peter Pig 15mm range. It would be noce if Martin would expand the range slightly, there were some lovely ideas for afew new packs several years ago which to date haven't seen the light of day – but for which I'm always hopeful :)
