I have Tiller and Whipstaff and like the mechanics a lot. I am into 18th century naval as well. Unfortunately I asked Langton and they have no plans for 18th century rules. Has anyone modified his Napoleonic Naval Rules to cover the 18th century? I would be interested to know the modifications. I am not interested in discussing other rule sets. Already have a boatload. |

What modifications do you need? The main differences for the 1700's are: - pre 1780 you have a wider variety of gun rates (44, 50, 54, 60, 64, 70, 74, two and three decked 80's etc.) - ships were generally lighter armed at the smaller end of the scale - no carronades - fewer frigates mid century and no frigates early century - greater preponderance of smaller rates mid to early century |

Did anyone make modifications to the ship stats, broadsides, and tables in the rules? What were they specifically? That is what I want to know. |

More importantly tell me all about Tiller and Whipstaff. I'm interested but no one else is locally. With no other I won't buy them unless I have some information about them. I have Signal Close Action so just tell me how they differ. |

There's a list of modifications including altering the broadsides for no-carronades in the appendix to 4th Ed. Basically your close range and musket range broadsides get weaker (2/3rds & 1/2 IIRC) whilst your long range fire gets marginally stronger, (1 band up). You should be able to work it out by calculating the broadside weight. |

Dragon6 I only have Tiller and Whipstaff right now. I believe it mirrors the mechanics of Signal Close Action Fast Play where the core mechanic is rolling three dice to see if you can complete your actions (turning, fire, melee, etc.) and morale rolls at the end of the turn. Is that the one you have? Red Line I assume you are talking the full rule set, not the fast play edition. Does the fast play edition have a similar appendix? |

Red Line is indeed talking about the full rule set. the Fast Play set I have doesn't have such an appendix. I do think the full set may be useful anyway. It certainly gives you an appreciation of how fast the Fast Play set actually is, plus you can tack bits on to the Fast Play set if you really want to add the extra complication. And the useful Appendix of course! Cheers, JohnG |
