In this thread over here, we were discussing Napoleonics as the "crack of wargaming", so naturally somebody had to start adapting psychadelic songs to Napoleonic subjects… (Okay, no, that's not really natural at all, but I think it's a fun idea anyway, so I ran with it. Meet me on the field of battle if you don't like it. Thhbbbbbtttt.) Deadhead started this one, I finished it, and now I'm posting it so it can be stuck in your head too. Working title is "Waterlucy", until a higher quality pun comes along. Sung to the tune of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".
Picture yourself on a ridge south of Brussels With redcoated troopers and grey leaden skies Somebody calls you, you form square quite slowly The ensign right next to you diesThe colours he carried, of yellow and green Snatched from right over your head See that dragoon with the gleam in his eyes And he's gone Loosely formed in squares and diamonds Loosely formed in squares and diamonds Loosely formed in squares and diamonds Aaaaaaaaaaah….. Follow your mates to fill holes in formation Stumbling past bodies and wounded who cry Everyone's panicked, your sergeant just glowers You crouch in the front of the line Artillery rounds fill the air by the score Carrying comrades away Peer through the smoke drifting by in thick clouds Then it's gone Loosely formed in squares and diamonds Loosely formed in squares and diamonds Loosely formed in squares and diamonds Aaaaaaaaaaah….. Picture yourself standing firm for the next charge The horsemen come fast and then gallop on by Suddenly one swings a saber, you shoot him And see the light fade from his eyes Loosely formed in squares and diamonds Loosely formed in squares and diamonds Loosely formed in squares and diamonds Aaaaaaaaaaah….. Loosely formed in squares and diamonds Loosely formed in squares and diamonds Loosely formed in squares and diamonds Aaaaaaaaaaah….. Loosely formed in squares and diamonds Loosely formed in squares and diamonds Loosely formed in squares and diamonds Aaaaaaaaaaah…..

Don't be shy, give it a try, corrupt a pop tune for a Napoleonics guy. Keep in clean, make it catchy, remain period appropriate, and try to appeal to someone insane enough to read Chandler, Clausewitz, and all of the Sharpe novels. - Ix |

Just brilliant I am at a loss to come up with anything but feel Hero's by David Bowie could be corrupted to Wargaming |

I'd leave Heroes out of it -it's just too good to fiddled about with -especially when you can't spell it lol. |

Theres', sorry their's, hang on theirs', or is it there's nothing wrong with an occasional apostrophe disaster wes'…we's all done it. I'm still working on White Rabbit for Waterloo. Purely because it is the best short track ever…..and she was so cute back then, forty plus years ago. I never got beyond (and you do have to know how she looked and sounded….out of her skull mind you); One round hits First Legere and one round missed them all and the next ones fired by Mercer don't do anything at all go ask Adkin…..etc etc Then I thought Allix as it sounds better, but he was not there!…actually that rhymes……….HMMMMMMM Go ask Allix, but he was not there…… only a dozen lines to go……. Yellow Admiral is too modest above. I only did the first two verses and the chorus, he challenged me to finish it. He did the rest…..genius! |

Some of the historical tunes of the Napoleonic era aren't too bad: My Bonnie Light Horseman, for example. youtu.be/MWhyzAAk6yM |

Badajoz Sung to the tune of "Purple Haze" Badajoz, down on the plain, Under siege, but Soult is on his way, Now says Wellie, assault tonight, Suddenly, those walls look too high!
Badajoz, lit by flame Breaches filling with the dead and lame Grenades and screams and musket fire Fill the air, while the smoke rises ever higher Help me! Help me! Oh no, no… ooh, ah ooh, ah ooh, ah ooh, ah Badajoz, smoke in my eyes Don't know if it's day or night, The city fell, but the French are gone Did they… give up, or just die to a man? Badajoz…. Badajoz…. Badajoz…. Badajoz…. |

Then there is Waterloo Sunset………. Or sticking with the most beautiful girl of the 60s (other than Mrs Deadhead of course, but she was jailbait then)…..some of you may know the song……. When the Prussians prove Good All…ies and all of the hope within you dies Don't you want old Grouchy to come Don't you need old Grouchy to come Wouldn't you love etc etc |

Fleets In Motion Sung to the tune of "Sweet Emotion" by Aerosmith Fleets in motion…. Fleets in motion…. The French sailed out and found our men-o-war there Wearing round now to get our guns to bear The signal flags fly but the meaning ain't clear Both fleets sail as if blind men steer More sail is ordered and the canvas gets bent We tack in succession when the order gets sent We're bearing down now, their position is dire They close up their line and get ready to fire Fleets in motion…. Fleets in motion…. The smoke billows out, see the fall of a spar The French started shooting from a little too far We held our own fire 'til we got close by Then we poured it on hard and let the doubleshot fly Yes we did! The French wore away and escaped in the smoke Our rigging was cut and our ships' masts broke The signal to chase we just couldn't understand There was no way to catch 'em before they made land - Ix |

A really cool idea! Before the old gang here in Baltimore broke up we used to write epic poems, (among other things), celebrating our glorious victories or, in my case anyway, lamenting our disastrous defeats. That was fun but putting them to music like this would have been much more so. John |

2000 Miles From France Played to the "tune" of 2000 Light Years From Home by the Rolling Stones
La Grande Armée sets in motion Leaving homes and wives with high emotions Bound for glory with great devotion It's so very lonely, we're a hundred miles from FranceWindy open plains chill the heart Partisans here in every part It's so very lonely, we're eight hundred miles from France <Interlude> It's so very lonely, we're a thousand miles from France It's so very lonely, we're a thousand miles from France <Interlude> Too many lost at Borodino Winter finds us short of food and ammo Now buildings burn all over Moscow It's so very lonely, we're two thousand miles from France It's so very lonely, we're two thousand miles from France
