John Hill passed away today.

He was the designer of Avalon Hill's Squad Leader among many other board wargames. His impact on the board wargaming hobby was immense and he will be dearly missed.

I got him to autograph my copy of Squad Leader over 30 years ago. He was certainly one of the giants of the hobby.

My brother and I met him at a GenCon probably 15 years ago and had a nice talk with him. Very nice man.

Godspeed to The Squad Leader.

That's terrible news. I met John when I attended Purdue University. He ran a hobby shop and invited me over to game several times. He could not have been very old.
Very sorry to hear this.

RIP. He was a big influence on my hobby life, which is one of the most satisfying parts of my life over-all. Thanks for that.

Many of his games such as Squad Leader, Yalu, Battle for Stalingrad, and others showed a tremendous design for effect with different ways to simulate battles. It was a shame that he reached the top so fast with Squad Leader and Johnny Reb in that not much came out afterwards. He will be missed.

God's love enfold you and your family. Good bye John.

OSchmidt13 Jan 2015 11:00 a.m. PST

Sad news indeed. I only met him once and was taken with his sense of non self-importance. He said some of the wisest things about the hobby. The best I remember was "If you put it in the rules it will show up in every game." He was speaking about 13" seacost Columbiads I believe.

Good man, sad to see he is no longer amongst us.

21eRegt13 Jan 2015 12:37 p.m. PST

Never had the pleasure of talking to him, but I certainly benefitted for many, many years from his work. RIP

Great designer. Sad to hear of his passing.

RIP.
