Can anyone point me to a reliable source for early war (Up to Midway) source on the capability and maybe actual numbers for the AA fire in this early war period. thanks NICK |

The Clash of Arms books are a great reference. You would need one for each country but you don't need to buy the game. Conversely you could buy an older edition of the game that would come with all the pacific ships. They still list the actual guns before their stats. Cheers Joe |

I'm not sure I understand the question. Are you asking for general, systems information? Like how did the IJN actually perform it*, and how effective were they, stuff like that? Or is it more like Joe seems to interpret it: How many of what types of guns did Ship X have at Coral Sea? * spoiler: not well |

Here's an on-line reference for the USN in WWII. If you scroll down-page, you'll find a table listing ships by type. Click on the type and it will give you a listing of ships by name with info on machinery, specifications, armament, etc. link |

Here's an on-line reference for the IJN in WWII. Very similar to the link for the USN, the info is there, you just have to dig it out: combinedfleet.com/kaigun.htm |

The Data Annex from Command at Sea at mentioned lists all the hardware and dates of upgrades for the Japanese and American fleets. I don't still play the game system, but cherish the info. You used to be able to buy the components of the boxed set clashofarms.com/risingsun.html but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Watch eBay. |

Read "Shattered Sword, the Untold Story of Midway", information on that is unbelievably complete. |

Thanks for the help. I did not word the question well. The links posted will be very helpful and I have read Shattered Sword but am looking for other sources as well. The second part of the question was in regard to an actual breakdown of the effectiveness of the American and Japanese AA fire at Midway. Was Japanese AA fire an effective threat or was their CAP the main threat to US torpedo and dive bombers. Knowing the military, I assume they conducted some sort of study during or after the war on such an issue. thanks again NICK |

There are dozens if not hundreds of individual, top-level command, and task force reports on a variety of Pacific Theater of Operations actions. The Hyperwar project has amassed a large volume of them, should you wish to peruse it. Here's a partial link to, specifically, early-war PTO AAR's from various levels: link |
