Who makes the best battlemats?

(Not counting the ones you have to print out yourself.)

Joep12311 Jan 2015 8:23 p.m. PST

I have the Corsec Engineering Sea Mat…very well done.

I'd like to see how the voting would go.

Loving my Cigar Box mats…haven't unrolled any others since I got them.

My first mats were the Cigar Box (2) and I think they are the perfect mats for Napoleonic warfare.

Cyrus the Great11 Jan 2015 9:50 p.m. PST

I do not own any at the moment, but I have thought, that in the future, I would purchase Cigar Box mats.

I'm considering ordering the Holtz mats modern 25mm roads. Any opinions or advice?

My old GeoHex ones have withstood 25+ years of gaming.

raylev311 Jan 2015 10:50 p.m. PST

Still waiting for my Cigar Box mat….

But I REALLY miss the Terrain Guy!!!!

Pictors Studio11 Jan 2015 11:29 p.m. PST

I think Zuzzy makes the best. I love my Zuzzy mat.

Been using the same Mat O War for seven years now…

The Terrain Guy

Cigar Box Battles.

Alas, my Terrain Guy mat has stretched out of shape in spots over the years, so I would not vote for that.

Homemade … you always get exactly what you want and a feeling of accomplishment comes with it!

That said, I like my Zuzzy, Hotz, and WarZone (do those count as "mats"?) as well as the ready-made ones that come with Wings of War/Glory. I think I like them all for different reasons, too … the Zuzzys have wonderful texture, Hotz were customized and simple (order, layout, play), WarZone is part of an overall theme set, and WoW/G are focused to create a specific (wonderful) effect for a specific game.

My Zuzzy mats are in a class of their own. I have Hotz, GW, Corsec, etc.

For surface gaming, go Zuzzy. For Space Gaming go Corsec.

My current favorites are Cigar Box but I think highly of Corsec as well.

Martian Root Canal12 Jan 2015 7:52 a.m. PST

I'd add Zuzzy (which are indeed in a class of their own) if I weren't still waiting for mats I ordered the first week in July.

freerangeegg12 Jan 2015 8:33 a.m. PST

Depends what you're using them for:
I really like my old Citadel battle mat, -sadly now discontinued- for 15mm temperate games.
I have a Terrain Mat desert mat which I like for 15mm North africa
A Hotz mat blue sea mat and a fields map for naval/aerial games.

Monty's mats:

I did a lot of research looking around and decided to go with Monty.

Hotz mats are very good also, I particularly like the additional and various field sizes which come in different types/seasons.

If you just use the web cart to order the mat or fields will arrive in about four to five weeks. However, communication is virtually nil ie via email contact.

Old Contemptibles12 Jan 2015 10:03 a.m. PST

I have a Monday Knight mat and several Go-Hex and just received a mat from Cigar Box that I haven't used yet.

Moe the Great12 Jan 2015 10:53 a.m. PST

I have just received two Monday knight mats and I am kinda mixed. Great service, great price, fast delivery, Although the border was uneven and had some loose flock, (Which after a thin coat of watered down white glue was fine) I would at this point order from them again.

Zuzzy is great, no communication, SLOW as dirt.
Hotz is great, less communication, SLOWER than dirt.

I'm with etotheippi: home-made. Can't beat the satisfaction of making your own, and customizing it to what you want, and need. Cheers!

Quite a few players and gaming stores where I am have picked up FAT mats by TableWar and Frontline Gaming. I really like them myself and picked up a few for home use. They are like big 6x4 mouse pads. They came out of Kickstarter about a year ago and we've used them almost weekly with very little wear and tear.

A few pictures of the Space and Grasslands mats can be seen over at our club photo gallery.

The Terrain Guy used canvas. I have three of them, and they get a lot of use. I have never had a problem with them stretching. However, my inability to roll them up straight causes some issues for me, but that has nothing to do with the production of his mats. I vote for the Terrain Guy.

Rhingyll15 Jan 2015 7:23 a.m. PST

I would have to say the Terrain Guy. Although Zuzzy and Cigar Box come in as very close seconds.

Fenriswolf15 Jan 2015 9:28 p.m. PST

I wish I picked up one from the Terrain Guy before he closed shop.

Moe the Great16 Jan 2015 7:45 a.m. PST

If anyone is in need of a 4x6' Fat Mat "Grassy Plains" let me know. I also have a 4x4" ruined city mat for sale.

And as stated above I do endorse them both.

Fenriswolf16 Jan 2015 12:07 p.m. PST

I may be interested in the grassy plains one.

I was alil nervous regarding cigar box…fleece mats.

I took a chance and ordered two desert mats for 15mm.

They are great, I am so pleased with the product.

Wargameology17 Jan 2015 9:01 a.m. PST

I would like to know more about cigar box fleece mats-is the material strechable?

I am considering an order but am worried if the material stretches beyond its original size because in DBA, the size of the playing area is fixed.
