Can anyone point me to a good set of Armada period rules where one ship per player is possible? Also what are the various models available for the period? |

I've been working on and off with an Armada period variant of Form Line of Battle. TTG published a set called Armada many years ago, they were supposed to be quite good. Not quite there yet though. A recent release is Zvezda's Armada Invincible game which has been designed for use with their 1/350 scale models. Apart from the Zvezda models there is the Valiant 1/1200 range (I have a big box of unpainted ones waiting for a big dollop of time for me to sort them out) and te old mainstay is the various Airfix models (Revenge, Golden Hind etc.) that "old School" wargamers often converted to give themselves armada fleets in the past. |

Splitting the difference size-wise, there's the Skytrex 1/600 stuff too. link If you're going for just one ship per player I'd be very tempted by the Zvezda though…. |

I have a bunch of the Skytrex 1/600 Armada period ships. They look better painted than in the raw metal, and they are just large enough to customize (add a deck or two to the poop, alter railings, move or modify the stern galleries, add carvings or lanterns to the stern, modify the bow gallery shape/details, add extra deck guns or gun ports on the side, etc.). I also find a lot of the Peter Pig 1/450 stuff mixes well with them: the Fluyt mixes in without modification, the boats and "junk in the water" markers look fine next to them, the "open gun ports" glue right on to the Skytrex models, etc. I also have a box full of the Valiant 1/1200 ships, but I think they're a bit small for one ship per player. I have yet to find rules I'm happy with. I thought the old "Ship of the Line" supplement for the Armada period worked fine for 1-3 ships per player, though a wee bit generic.

The 'HMS' title was first used on Royal Navy ships in 1660, long after the Revenge had foundered. |
