Something different…

"Lady_Godiva by the French painter Jules Joseph Lefebvre (1836–1911). As legend tells Lady Godiva was a 11th century English princess married to Leofric, the Earl of Mercia and lord of Coventry. She begged her husband to relieve the townspeople of the oppressive taxes and tolls. He refused, unless she agree to ride through the town naked on horseback. Out of respect for their lady, it is said, the townspeople stayed indoors during her ride."

Actually she rode through Coventry stripped of her jewels and fine clothes dressed in peasants clothing not nude – but that's quite a dull story.

I fail to see any figures here…

I thought that she went dressed in her shift, although naked always sounds more sensationalised? Trent Miniatures do a dual Lady Godiva figure (dressed & naked)

Legend has it that all but one of the inhabitants of Coventry averted their eyes, except one man called Tom. I think the story goes that he was struck blind and thus his 'crime' was made obvious. Thereafter, he was known as 'Peeping Tom' from where English gets that expression :)

The whole story is so much nonsense. She was a Countess, not a Lady; she owned Coventry, and herself had the authority to set the taxes; Tom isn't mentioned until about 800 years later. The nude ride isn't recorded until 200 years after its alleged occurence.

Most mythic stories are nonsense. One shouldn't confuse them with history. There is, at times, a fragment of truth buried in them, but usually only just. I'd rather rood a well written Arthur story than a grim and banal history of the Britons, but the reverse is also true. The importance is really in the quality of the telling.

That said, thank you for the history. The reality behind the story is quite interesting in its own right.
