Hey All, Great War at Sea – Jutland happened to be under the Christmas tree for me this year (okay, I admit I put it there myself). I'm going to play it for the first time this weekend. I think we'll go with Operation Scenario #7. The scenario says that the game lasts for 30 turns or something (maybe its 24). My question is, what happens after that – do you just call it quits no matter what the ships are doing? Do you HAVE to get them back to port. I didn't actually see any mention of this in the rules. If anyone has played an operation game for these Avalanche Press games, I'd appreciate if you could let me know what you do. -Tim |

No mention of this as far as I can remember. I suppose strictly for victory conditions within the domain of the scenario it is not required (i.e. if the British just need bombard somewhere then they win reguardless of whether all their ships are on sunk on the way home) but ultimately I suspect both players would want to know if winning the scenario cost the entire Grand Fleet and war. |

That's the nominal end of the scenario, but of course it's a few turns short of a decision I'd simply carry on. :) You don't need to get your ships back to port, the scenario just ends at that point. -Will |

I forgot to mention that some of the scenarios ARE time sensitive (ie, if one side has unlimited time to accomplish their tasks they will always win), keep that in mind. -Will |

I would obey the time limits. At the end you count VPs , Scenario conditions and you see who won. As Will said time sensitivity is part of the story. This is a great operational game. I gave it away because I could not find players for it, beyond one guy in Greece with whom I played now and then. But the operational game is great. |

Thanks guys. It turned out that we didn't have to play it or till the bitter end. The Germans lost a scouting force, but then caught a couple battle cruisers with a larger battle cruiser force and annihilated them. The Germans then retreated to harbor and won with vps… Which is kind of what they were trying to do the whole war anyways! The operational system was lots of fun and the tactical game is acceptable considering on how many ships you are controlling. We will probably check out some of the other theaters they have. Midway… Mmm. |

Tim, they do have advanced rules that up the realism for tactical battles. There is also no reason not to use your favorite miniatures for those battles. Their rules are just set-up the way they are to limit the scenario play time to a weekend or less. |
