Hi, I'm just starting to apply my LBMS shield transfers to my 15mm Romano-British figures from Splintered Light. My shield rims (which are fairly thick on the SL figures) are currently white, but I would like to match up the colors to the transfers where they are variously red, golden brown, or wood brown etc. Before I start to experiment, I thought I would see if anyone had already done this, and remembered what colors they used? I use Vallejo and some Army Painter for the most part, with AP washes. Cheers, Christopher |

I'd leave them white (indeed the whole shield face should be white for the transfer to work properly), and then match the rim colour by eye one the transfer is on. I did that with the 10mm versions, though the shields had no rims, the edges still had to be matched up. |

Yes, just to be clear, I'm talking about matching up the rims to the shield transfer colors (where they are not white) after they have been applied. |

I've been able to match most of them with Vallejo colors, though I don't keep track. I find it easiest to sort them by color after applying the transfers and paint all rims of one color at the same time. |

I do the same with my 28mm figures apply the shield transfer on the shield that has been painted white then blend in the parts that the transfer dose not cover by eye. Since (at least with 28mm) shield transfers the color may be slightly different from the top of the shield to the bottom. So having a blend of colors on a pallet and mixing them as needed works well. |

It was quite surprising how easy it is to match up colors by simply adding a bit of this and a bit of that to a base color to achieve the correct tone. Half a shade one way or the other doesn't seem to make much difference to the eye either. |

I just finished applying those same transfers to those same miniatures. I wouldn't worry about being too precise in your color matching – at 15mm, close enough is good enough (for me, and I take a lot of pride in my painting). |

I use oil paint for touching up those decals. Well, I always use oil paint but in this instance the slightly thicker substance hides any irregularities. |

For the record, here's what I ended up using: Black and Dark Grey. Vermilion (most of the red shields are pretty bright) and Red. "English Uniform" is a good match for the brown. Yellow Ochre (with sepia wash) is okay for the yellow/gold. It's better to dry-wash the white on the white edges. It definitely pays off to spend the time cleaning up the rims and around the shield boss. These shields really "pop" with the extra effort. |
