"Military Uniforms in America: The Era of the American Revolution 1755-1795" I have had this book in my uniform library for years, yet I don't refer to it a lot. Someone in our club asked me about it, so I thought I would get some expert opinions concerning the book. |

All the artists are experts in the field, and cite their sources. I can't say any better than that. |

You are correct they do site their sources. I wonder if the style of the artwork seems dated to some. |

It's an expensive book, not that easy to find copies. Much of the artwork has been copied by other artists in cheaper formats. It's much easier to pick up an Osprey or two. But I always pull out my CMH volumes when I'm reviewing a subject. |

I have a few of their books and have used them as references for painting many figures. Very, very good material in them. |

You can still buy a lot of their plates from their website. I have book, but also a dozen or more other plates not included in it. But Zippy is correct; much of their stuff has been copied in other places. |

If you are simply looking for information, the style shouldn't really matter. After all, look at the NYPL Vinckhuizen collection. |

Some of the information is dated – for example, the representation of the 4th Foot light company in the 1770s is based on what is now known to be a mis-reading of an Inspection Report. |

Its a bit dated, and a bit of the information has been proven wrong over the years. Especially for Washingtons Guard and Haslets Delaware Regt. I also have a lot of their AWI prints, and that was also an issue with the older prints. Newer information has come to light in the last 30+ years. For AWI uniforms, Don Troiani is THE go to guy today IMO. Bob |

Ditto – it was excellent for its time and still has some good info – just hard to know which is right and which is outdated. At least for their plates on British Marines, it gives no references of value, so I can't say for other works. Don (and Jim) are very good, but they make mistakes too, and sometimes make judgement calls when info just isn't there. He has to paint something, right? :-) But back to the post – the book is certainly worth having if you are a serious student of the period. |
