Which miniatures ruleset would you recommend for Post-Apocalypse sci-fi gaming?

SgtPain08 Jan 2015 7:35 p.m. PST

Currently I've been playing a lot of games with Mutants and Death Ray Guns, a fast and fun rule set. Highly recommend!

Skirmish, 1:1, company or big battle level?

After the Horsemen and/or All Things Zombie (depending on your preferred apocalypse.)

The Gamma World RPG is fun if done tongue in cheek.

Across the Dead Earth…great set of rules that came out last year along with some excellent figures.

We've played a few games of Nuclear Renaissance and found it to be just the right mix of fast play, customization and gonzo post-apoc goodness. Here are a couple of reviews and game reports:

if you want something bigger than warband-sized combat, Shockforce is a great option for games at the platoon level. Otherwise I agree with PatrickWR and I'll repost what I said in an earlier post as my opinions haven't changed.

For most any post-apoc, I'd recommend at least giving a look to Nuclear Renaissance (NucRen). We played it at 4 different meetings this year and enjoyed it. It's very flexible, and easy to learn (important for us). We played it with and without vehicles in both sci-fi and post-apoc settings and it worked well for all.

Our club loves the post-apoc setting and over the past 4 years we've tried the following rulesets for post apoc and zombie apoc games:
-Wastelands 1.2
-Wastelands Meltdown
-Neutron York 3k
-This is Not a Test
-Apocalypticium
-Blasters and Bulkheads
-ATZ
-Wreck Age
-In The Emperor's name
-Nuclear Renaissance

NucRen is our favorite so far and I think it's the one we're going to stick with for a while. The only points I'd make about the system are:
-Lots of guns is very dangerous. Make sure you and your opponent are not going spam-crazy with powerful weapons
-Lots of terrain is best
-Smaller tables are usually better.

Here's a link to write-ups and observations of the 4 games we played.

For "standard" Post Apoc genre:
Wreck Age.

Very well done set of rules that combines full Post Apoc rpg and detailed miniatures skirmish game. You can play it as either or a hybrid depending on how much character detail and non combat narrative you want to include. Also has a superb figure range and some excellent supporting fiction/short stories.

For a more fantasy take on Post Apoc:
EDEN.
Extremely tactical low model count Boutique game with exquisite figures.

Across the Dead Earth – is very easy to pick up but very enjoyable. There's a progression system of abilities. Nice but not overpowering event cards. Bands of 5 – 10.

Obvious personal bias, but Quick Intermediate Level Skirmish. It's flexible and allows you to create a lot of the tactical and operational situations that are fun in postapoc- raging close combat monsters, weak but indestructible hordes, huge areas of hazardous terrain, mutant powers (using magiq and tricked out points), useful technology that is likely to crap out at a critical moment … We only have one postapoc scenario out: Royal Kanadian Mutant Police: Mission of Merci; we should fix that.

Beyond that I love class and the new Gamma World. GURPS is also pretty flexible and I have run lots of postapoc games with it, too.
