I've been collecting Schleich and Papo figures off and on for years. I hadn't looked at the Schleich World of Knights for a while. During Christmas I went looking for some online. What the heck happened? The good looking figures are retired and the new lfires look like bad knockoff's of Peter Jackson's Gondorian troops. Papo seems to still have some realistic looking medieval figures. What other companies are making 90mm medieval and ancient figures?

Good question. Disappointingly, I noticed the same thing myself.

I've always loved those figures. Check out the Papo-France homepage; they have an English language version. The Medieval-era section still has a fair number of figures but I noticed they're Knight-heavy. No regular spearmen and few other basic infantry types.

A few years ago a group of guys ran a HUGE game at one of the HMGS East conventions featuring a massive scratch built plywood castle defended and attacked by Papo/Schleich figures. It was one of the most spectacular games I've ever seen.

I thought about starting a collection for my son… cough… cough… :-) Good excuse to get some.

What! I love the new figures. I ordered one of each from Happy Hen Toys online store and got the best price. I did not order the flying dragon or eagle.

I like them because I play Song of Blades and Song of Arthur and Merlin. These give a nice fantasy element to the medieval game. Each one is a personality unto itself. And oh, I already have all of the other realistic knights.

See them here in all their glory.

Awhile back I obtained a carload of Willow figures (even an Eborisk!), which are about 90mm, but gaming with them has been a problem--there are lots of mounted and foot men-at-arms, but no archers! I hope to find some some day, but they need to look pretty Dark Ages-ish to fit in. I was hoping Papo or Schleich would fill the gap, but apparently they are concentrating on knights. Nuts.

Lion's Den's photograph: Now these guys have a real(!) problem. On the other hand . . . their wives know what their husbands are doing, with whom they are doing it, where their money is going, . . . and that their husbands do not have the time, money or inclination for booze, dope, or other women. 8-)

Lions Den, I think the change wouldn't bug me if they hadn't retired all the semi-realistic figures. Looks like they are retiring some of the Griffin knights as well. I'll have to snag some for conversion to High Elves.
