An earthquake nearly 3,000 years ago may be the culprit in the mysterious disappearance of one of China's ancient civilizations, new research suggests.The massive temblor may have caused catastrophic landslides, damming up the Sanxingdui culture's main water source and diverting it to a new location. Based on my visits to the museums at Sanxingdui and Jinsha, I gathered that it may not have been a disappearance, so much as a migration from the former to the latter, even though a river remains near the Sanxingdui site. Apparently, there were a few additional sites in what is now Sichuan Province that also shared similar material culture. Regardless, the cause of the migration was a mystery, so this is an interesting possible explanation. |

Interestingly this appears to have occurred at roughly the same time that the Bronze Age cooling occurred in the Mediteranean region. link In the Mediteranean this led to several centuries of drought which led to the demise of Mycenean civilization and a Dark Age that lasted four centuries. |
