I want to use some pre WW1 Naval landing parties for Africa and I wonder if the uniform was different from the WW1 version? Grateful for any comments! |

Those are Royal Marines and that uniform would be appropriate for Africa. They would probably wear white helmets. |

As mentioned, white helmets were frequently worn. Prior to 1905 they would still have worn the Foreign Service type, familiar to Colonial gamers. I'm not sure exactly what the new pattern (adopted '05) looked like as there was a a lot of experimentation in the early part of the Century until the Wolseley was settled on in 1912. Cerdic's picture is indeed RMLI. That pattern of Field Service Cap (and the one worn by the Studio Miniatures figures) was replaced in by the "Broderick" Cap (Forage Cap, New Pattern). Army issue began in '02, Marines in '04. In June of '04 a General Order confirmed that Marines who had recently been issued old pattern FS caps could continue to wear them until they were due for a new issue, so they could theoretically still be worn until 1906. Uniform for ops in Africa and Asia was usually the blue tunic and white trousers, but there was also a tropical uniform. enfant perdus, thanks for the nice picture of Great War marines in last link. You say they wore army uniforms. Were they dark blue or army khaki/od or what ever that greenish shade is called? Any one make a marine with an Accordion? Hinterland makes a vehicle rider with one, but hard to convert. |

They were standard Army issue, so khaki.
Here's one from my collection, dated 1917. Again, these are bootnecks serving in the Royal Naval Division on the Western Front.

Just for kicks, here's another one from my collection, showing USMC and RM in France, 1918.
The bootneck ranker is from the Royal Marine Artillery. Probably he has reverted to his blues for the photo, retaining the webbing belt and curious boots. |
