For plastic, you might want to look at For Sale, etc., signage at your local hardware or big box hardware stores. The signs come in varying sizes and thicknesses and aren't all that expensive.

For magnetic sheeting, check with a local sign shop. They use rolled magnetic sheeting to make vehicle body signs. I've purchased small quantities from one in my home town and overall it was less expensive than buying precut pieces. I also understand some big box hardware (and maybe local stores) carry magnetic floor furnace outlet covers that can be useful as well. I've never seen any down here in Mississippi but you may be able to find them in the NE USA.

Good luck with your searches.

It's a shame you're already committed to putting the magnets on the bases (instead of on the movement trays or in the storage cases) – Wargames Accessories sheet metal bases are priced reasonably and (I think) look great.

McMaster-Carr makes adhesive backed magnetic strip in a variety of sizes. I base all of my 28mm figures using their tab with metal movement trays.

Cheapest source of magnetic material I've found is printable Fridge Magnet paper.

I've been buying it here in the UK at PoundWorld at 50p an A4 sheet. In the States Michael's or Dollar Stores will carry it.

Really easy to cut and glue to your bases.Great for terrain pieces. I was lucky and got a box of 48 NOBO magnetic sheets of ebay for £20.00 GBP normally they're £3.50 GBP each.

You can also buy adhesive magnetic tape in various widths. ebay is your friend for that.Comes in 1m,5m and 10m lengths.

Can't help with the plastic sorry.

I assume I could cut the .75mm sheets with heavy duty scissors pretty accurately.
You can… for the first hundred or so bases before cramping makes you very unhappy. I use a paper cutter. Much easier but you must be very careful to align your plastic.

A millimeter might not be much but over ten bases it becomes a problem. An ever growing one if you are not careful.

1mm (40 thou) plastic sheet of the type that can be used for vacuum forming.

Sharp knife and good metal edge to rule and score needed.

auction

Without the magnetic backing I'd go for 60 thou.

I've bought both .040 and .060 styrene in 4'x8' sheets from a local commercial plastics place. It was by far the cheapest way to acquire it, but you need to need a LOT of it to justify a 4x8 sheet!

Ditto on the Garage Sale signs and especially the McMaster-Carr sticky back magnetic sheets. You can cut each with a paper cutter, en masse. Only problem is then putting them together, that becomes quite tedious. Matching each one. Just tonight have have been doing this. I am wondering why not just put the figures directly on the magnets.

I make a lot of Fridge magnets so have the printer sheets. I had hoped they would be good for bases as I have lots of scraps; but in small sizes there is just not enough holding power.
