In case you haven't heard, government cuts have put the library and other collections at the Imperial War Museum under very immediate threat. There's a petition against it, which I expect many of the UK audience here would support. Please sign it, and encourage your friends to do so too!

Done. We must be constantly vigilant against the actions of Philistines.

What would they do with the holdings if they succeed in closing the library?

Lt Col Pedant05 Jan 2015 10:32 a.m. PST

The holdings would likely to be sold off to private investors. You know… the workings of the free market: that which was once publicly owned becomes the exclusive asset of a private individual.

This is one of those rumour mills based on making as much noise about worse case scenarios as possible-the official statement said

Referring to the proposed library closure, she said: "All accessioned collection items, and some (non-accessioned) books, and ephemera will remain under the museum's management and will continue to be accessible by appointment.

These are proposals – to beat up extra funding – and as you can see they are not planning on selling it all off.

In addition they are planning:

A programme of digitisation of these core collections is also in train so that those across the UK and further afield who are not able to visit the museum sites in person can engage with IWM's subject matter."

So sign away if you want but a better petition would be to get them to put some exhibits back on show and get rid of the dumbed down art show they have instead of a museum since the extravagant refurbishment (which is why they have no money now).

35 years ago I used if for an O level project on the battle of the bulge the staff were very helpful and treated me just as well as the PhD students

Gwydion – agreed. I went to the newly refurbished museum with my wife last year and wondered what they had done with the rest of it. The only section that had anything like the breadth or depth that the old layout had was the WW1 exhibition, which is a temporary exhibit. The rest just barely skimmed the surface.

The refurb really has ruined the place. Signed anyway, of course.
