I noticed another thread on the Battle of Trenton terrain on TMP,

TMP link

and coincidentally, I had just cleared off my war game table and was in the process of setting up my own Trenton terrain. It's great to see that other gamers are working on a scenario for this battle.

I'm looking for some ideas for simulating the surprise attack on the Hessian garrison at Trenton. This would seem to be a perfect subject for a skirmish type of game, but because I don't have any Continemtals or Hessians painted and based on single stands, I will have to use my regular battalions of 24-30 figures per unit.

Since there were 7 Continental brigades at Trenton, it is easy to have a battalion represent a brigade. But what about the Hessians? They had three regiments of varying size, but it appears that I could use four battalions of 30 figures to represent nearly the full garrison (1200 of the 1350 total numbers). Some jagers and artillery crew should fill out the roster nicely.

I think that I will position the Continentals at there historical starting positions and allow them the first move and fire. Should I scatter stands of Hessians throughout the town and let the gamers try to assemble their battalions into formation, or other ideas?

Beautiful table

Not sure how your rules work, but perhaps scatter the Germans and roll to see if each stand forms or not with another German element. Just a thought.

Make sure to include skirmishers stealing boots from wounded hessian.

That looks terrific! Too bad the terrain guy is no longer in business.

Great looking game. :-)

I divided my Hessian regiments into 4 15-20 figure companies.
One regiment (alt von Lossberg?) was "on call" and had a single company out patrolling, but found nothing.
The other two were in barracks.

So, I had an activation phase. where each regiment would respond to the sound of massed fire. Not piddling single shots, but a volley fire at regimental strength. That was a "GM discretion" thing, but fairly obvious.
The regiment on call was awake and ready on a number (I forget what) on a D20, while the other two had a higher number.
An activated regiment or company takes one turn to exit his building and is disordered. On the next turn, they are in perfect order, unless a combat result keeps them disordered.

That was in the Beta Flames of Liberty, 10 years ago. grin
It worked.

I suppose I could have had some super fiddly "wet powder" rule, but naaaah.

Nicely done! Your tables always draw in the viewer and inspire an urge to get in the game.

Are you planning on bringing this gem to the SYWAcon?

Very nice!

Excellent winter game & fantastic table.

@ Winston , Rall Regiment was Regiment de Jour on the day.
Morning patrol consisted of soldiers from all three regiments.

The OFM was just offering a barely remembered rule from more than 10 years ago.
He had been up late for months painting and the rules were very ad hoc and last minute.

Beautiful table!

Like the table on the other Trenton thread, your table is also beautiful.

Thumbs up, DAF. Definitely worth going over again at leisure with a nice cup of tea! Trenton appears to be very much in favour this/last year. Here's a link to another approach to Trenton at Angus Konstam's Edinburgh Wargames.

"approach" well that's one word for it.

A fine display as always!

Fantastic! How about changing the scale to, I don't know 1:10 maybe.

The Terrain Guy is an old friend of mine. Last I heard he opened up a game store in the Dallas area. Can't remember the name of the store. Not sure if he is selling his line of terrain products there or not.

I am using a 1:10 figure to men ratio. evil grin
