We decided to give the rules a go and so I decided to paint up my first retinue. I chose English Hundred Years war figures from Front Rank which paint up really well. We had a couple of games over the hols and all of us were very happy with them. They are very simple rules but everyone had fun with them, each game lasted about two hours and worked well as a multiplayer game, which for me was a real winner. Looking forward to many more games. Mark, how did you find Foot Serjeants' low attack value vs their defence value affect your games? And did shooting dominate or did you get a good balance between missile fire and melee? PS. Very nice looking Retinue you've got there! |

Hi Spike, in our fist game my foot sargeants did well against mounted sargeants as they were on the defensive most of the time. The mounted usually get first chance to attack because of the movement rates and numbers soon began to tell, 12 foot v 6 mounted. In the second game they were on the attack but got shot up by crossbows who then defended as well as the sargeants attack (5+). Crossbows can be lethal if you can get them to activate each move, but I was lucky in the first game when they failed to activate twice and I managed to close to melee in rough terrain with my foot men at arms (although reduced to 2 figures)and defeat them. It's a difficult one, knowing which forces to choose. If you're going to defend then foot sargeants are good value but you need to give them something to counter enemy missile fire. The rules are very well balanced I think and no one troop type is the king of the battlefield. However, I don't have any crossbows in my retinue but after our games I think I need some! At the moment I'm painting Normans as I think the rules will work just fine with Dark Age armies too. |

I like much about the rules but in the 2 games I've played so far I felt (and my opponent, who came off worse, felt) that shooting was too powerful compared with melee. In our last game my unit of Bidowers, which I placed in a wood that reached within 12" of the 'immovable object' that he was defending, together with a unit of Expert Archers shooting from further away, destroyed 2 of his foot units and mauled another without taking any significant casualties themselves. The weak Attack value (5+) of the Foot Serjeants who were defending the 'immovable object', supported by a unit of Archers, meant the Foot Serjeants were relatively impotent. I think we'll have to play a few more scenarios, and with some different lists, to see if the rules 'as is' balance out. |

Don't forget that the foot Sargeants are harder to kill than bowmen in a melee having the better armour value. They can be upgraded as well to give them a better attack value of 4+. I would have just moved my Foot Sargeants out of range of the Bidowers. Any missile troops in the open should be ridden down by mounted troops. Also don't forget that any troops fighting in rough terrain such as woods will fight on equal terms unless ferocious foot. Also sometimes you can win by just having a tactical advantage which it sounds like you did in the example you give. |
