"It's amazing how many Americans still don't know what the Civil War was all about. Here's a hint: it starts with an 's' and it has the same syllables but fewer letters than "secession."

This ignorance has cluttered my e-mail box since last week. While noting a legal battle over the image of the Confederate flag on Texas license plates, I had the temerity to state the only place I want to see the Stars & Bars is in a Civil War museum.

KevinLaserWriter, for example, wrote that his descendants fought as Confederates and that he is not a racist. I'll grant him both points.

When he says the Confederate battle flag is "not a symbol of hate," however, and when he refers to it as "my flag" I'm puzzled. Should I speak of the topic again, he admonishes, "please be educated first on what it represents."…"

More like, "Civil War Bias". Many people have the facts. They just don't see their significance in the same ways….

Old Slow Trot02 Jan 2015 8:19 a.m. PST

I read about similar challenges in the U.K. also, in an article in "History Revealed" concerning education about the ECW .

Here we go again…

I am curious as to what the OP hopes to achieve with this post.

Who asked this joker02 Jan 2015 10:37 a.m. PST

Someone please define for me what "Southern heritage" is in no uncertain terms. I hear that thrown out there a lot but nobody really ever qualifies what EXACTLY it is or what it means.

jpattern202 Jan 2015 10:42 a.m. PST

Read the article. The author summarizes how some define "Southern heritage" very well.

Who asked this joker02 Jan 2015 10:50 a.m. PST

how some define "Southern heritage"

…and there lies the problem. grin

jpattern202 Jan 2015 11:05 a.m. PST

Absolutely no argument from me. Southern apologists, on the other hand . . .

There are major differences between:

A: Southern apologists and Neo-Confederates…

B: People who celebrate "Southern Heritage" as opposed to "Southern Heritage I gotta have a Starz n Barz flag on mah truuuuuuuuuck"…

C: People who understand what the war was about, (all of the reasons and not the one that people are usually spoonfed and taught because it's the easiest answer)….

I've been called a racist on this site and on the Fez because of the flag avatar I use. I've had people on the Fez try to trick and goad me into suicidal self explanations on my avatar. Strangely enough, when I said "I would be more than happy to explain it to them IF they would just ask nicely and in a mature and decent manner.", they wouldn't do it. They felt it "more fun" to throw stones instead of discuss things rationally.

You ain't flying the Starz 'n' Barz, Murph. grin

THIS is the Stars and Bars, all set to add new states.

Not one person in a hundred could identify it. The St Andrew's cross is much more identifiable, though.

Yeps…

wink

I used that because of the author of the article thinks that is what it is….

And trying to tell folks differently, is like trying to teach a pig to sing….

wink

I'm British, don't game ACW and even I know what the two flags were. How come those making a fuss about it can't be bothered to find out a few facts ?

Which is the only place you will see the "Stars and Bars" flag. Talk about being ignorant of Civil War history.

This thread is nothing but an attempt to throw gasoline on a dying fire to no real purpose at all. Tango, I support a lot of your posts, but this whole thing is a breach of TMP etiquette. The people here are not racists or white supremacists or anything of the sort, nor are the general population of the South, nor even those who celebrate their "Southern Heritage." It's only those who are either looking to be offended or trying to flaunt their self-proclaimed moral superiority over everyone else who keep bring this crap up. It's pathetic, and I see no purpose in continuing this sort of garbage on TMP. Take it somewhere else.

No. I did not enjoy your post, Armand.

jpattern202 Jan 2015 1:50 p.m. PST

Would you enjoy it in a box? Would you enjoy it with a fox?

basileus6602 Jan 2015 2:17 p.m. PST

Hummm… I think that you missed the point, Parzival. Tango (Raul) is not from the US. Except you are into ACW controversy, for many foreigners -me included!- the whole debate about the use of the flag is difficult to grasp. Moreover, it is not easy to really understand what the memory of slavery and the war between the States really means for present day US citizens. Intellectually, we can understand the wound, but we can't really feel it. I imagine that it is what I feel when a non-Spanish tries to explain what the SCW meant and how Fascist or Communist you are if you sympathize with one of the sides and not with the other.

I don't believe that Tango was trying to imply that anybody here is a racist for being interested in the history of the Confederacy.

doc mcb02 Jan 2015 7:04 p.m. PST

Just as an historical point, the KKK most widely flew the US flag. Google images and see for yourself.

The Confederate battle flag was widely used in the 1950s and 60's in opposition to the civil rights movement and in defense of segregation. By which time the Confederate veterans who might have objected were all gone.

basileus66, if you are interested in discussing the debate on the use of the Confederate flag and much of the controversy surrounding it, please PM me, and I'll be happy to answer any questions or give a take on it… I've discussed this here numerous times before, and I don't feel like beating the dead horse again….

Thanks for the offer, Murph. I will write you.

In defense of the article's author: Read the secession declarations of the various Confederate states, issued to explain their withdrawl from the Union.

arthur181509 Jan 2015 10:31 a.m. PST

As an Englishman whose flag – the red St George cross on a white background – has been hijacked by football hooligans and racist political organisations like the British National Party, I can only feel similar sorrow that the Confederate Battle Flag under which so many men fought bravely – whatever they were fighting for – has been adopted by equally unpleasant people (amongst whom I do NOT include you, Murphy)that only besmirch it.
