Can anyone suggest a good alternative for GW's Smaug, that is not truly ludicrously priced? Thanks |

The Reaper Bones dragons are all reasonably priced. One of these should make a good Smaug stand-in: link |

All proper miniatures dragons of that size will be resin and expensive. But outside of miniatures gaming and into the toy realms, you got McFarlane Dragons… so maybe that? like this badboy, right here: theres tons of em to choose from too, and for 28mm they are huge

The Carmine Dragon from Forge World: link But it really doesn't compare in size. Forge World used to have a Fire Dragon but it doesn't seem to be there any more. I have one for sale, painted, but it is going to be more than the Smaug model from GW. |

I have a Mithril dragon that is pretty nice. You could also look at Heresy miniatures as he has mad a spectacular figure. |

My recent dragon purchases have all been Safari toys from Michaels or AC Moore: safariltd.com/category/fantasy They run 8-9" long, which may not be full Smaug size, but, hey, we need to actually play with it. link Some dry-brushing and repainting turns them into nice models. |

Michael's has some nice plastic ones, for around $20 USD, or a little less, prepainted. With a 40% – 50% off coupon, you can reduce that considerably, so they are worth a look. They have several different styles. If you don't like the current paintjob, you can always redo it, or touch it up to your liking. |

The Heresy Dragon is fantastic, though there is still a little bit of a wait on picking one up. |

I asked the same question on LAF. Here is the thread with some suggestions. link This toy one is new from Schliech, which is one of the few two legged dragon toys out there. link link

As chuck05 points out, the 1/32nd Vermathrax is large enough, very threatening, and very cheap. I bought one a few months back and it is a very nice model. I found a site where the fellow used LEDs to light him up his eyes: link |

otherwise, you could always check out your local candles and hippy store for these. link |

Vermithrax is *female*, lit up *her* eyes. Smug is male. Pet peeve of mine. The two legged, two winged critter is a wyvern. Dragons are six limbed. Smaug is long and thin, and has four legs, plus wings. Tolkien kindly provided several portraits. |

Here is my "Smaug the practical" – a simple repaint of the newly launched Schleich Dragon Fighter (see my post above). UK price is about £15.00 GBP.

If you want something useable and GW, try the lotr dragon. Or even a Warhammer dragon. Mantic and most fantasy companies have a dragon or five. GW was really messing with their customers with Smaug. They should have made a smaller flying stand in with two feet, tail tip, head and flame all on seperate useful bases as a plastic set. But they weren't about making games, just aiming at collectors by that point. |
