Howdy, Banks defeats Ewell at Luray! Two different descriptions of the Battle at Luray on Turn 4. Game played using Volley & Bayonet, Battalion scale (1 stand is a regiment). Number 1 Basically… The Yanks pushed Harstuff's Brigade forward thru the fog, revealing the Reb line. They halted at 8 inches and delivered fire. Rebs, unable to respond charged. (Rifle musket range = 8 inches, musket range = 4 inches) Hartstuff was thrown back exhausted but unbroken. Hartstuff fired caused Reb casualties. Reb's charged again. Hartstuff collapses but causes the Rebs more casualties. Yanks shake out and fire at Taylors's brigade exhausting them. Yanks continue their flanking move. Rebs as they come apart. Elzey covers the retreat. Number 2 We fought Luray last night (12/16/2014). Confederates retreated (to New Market) with very heavy casualties. Yanks lost a lot as well. The Yanks basically moved their first Brigade to 8" of the Rebel entrenchments and opened fire. The second Yank Brigade (the large one) moved west to flank the Reb trenches. The Rebs meet them in the open. Seeing arty coming up and unable to return fire he Rebs charged out of their entrenchments before the Yanks could go stationary. The Rebs exhausted Hartsuff (he didn't break) but took a couple of casualties. The rebs also threw back the large Yank brigade… again with casualties. The Yanks reformed and opened fire. Seeing the arty on the way, the Rebs charged again… This time Harsuff broke, but again the Rebs took casualties. The rest of the Yanks moved up and opened fire. They had a good turn of shooting and the Louisiana Brigade (Taylor's Brigade) exhausted and then broke. The other Reb brigade exhausted. The Rebs used their small reserve to cover the retreat. The Rebs were very overmatched. The longer Yankee range rendered the trenches fairly worthless. Yank Casualties were a heavy 22 strength points (SP) Rebs took 15 SP --- These casualties before regrouping. I aim to post more of the battles near Staunton, also on Turn 4 in the near future (soon as I get the pictures). Photo 1 – Yankees enter the board in the fog
Photo 2 – Discover Secessionist entrenchments
Photo 3 – Rebs charge!!!!
Photo 4 – … and charge again!!!!

Interesting… How much do you need to modify the rules to play at battalion level? -Bryan |

Howdy, Very little modification. Brigade stand to regiment stand 1 SP to 200 men Movement same 1 turn to 30 min Firing ranges double Calculate exhaustion by brigade, not division. Commanders at brigade level. That's it. Ponder on, JAS

Thanks for the info. What ground scale do you use? 1" =50yds? Bryan |

Yes, 1 inch = 50 yds for battalion scale, normally 1 inch = 100 yds for brigade scale. JAS |

What about short range vs. long range? As I recall, in "normal" V&B if you were within short range of a unit you had to take a morale test. In "brigade" scale, ACW rifles had no short range, just a long range. If you are now doubling the ranges, is there still no short range for rifles or did you introduce one – say at 2" (100 yards)? Also … with 1 SP = 200 men, your stands are only going to have 1-3 SP's. I would be thinking that they should be mounted on linear stands (but move as if they are on brigade stands)? I'm also thinking that, at least if the figures were mounted on linear stands, when they turn they should wheel around a front corner rather than rotate around the center (in normal "brigade" scale, a stand represents several regiments, so turning around the center makes some sense – but in "regimental" scale the stand is one cohesive unit) |

Happy New Year, All ranges were doubled, included listed short ranges. For infantry without advanced small arms, short range is contact. This is unchanged. In the photos from the Shenandoah campaign, note the mass stands. In my Kernstown game from Fall-IN, I used linear stands. Does not make much difference in my opinion. Ponder on, JAS |
