So, who makes 15-18mm figures that could be used as early New World pirates, like the Elizabethan Sea Dogs who sailed with Hawkins, Drake, Raleigh (1550-1600 AD)?
Thoughts? Thanks, Dan |

15's are a hard go. Khurasan has some late 16thC forthcoming that might do well enough. I am using Essex, which is hit or miss. I have a sizable pool of packs I pick over and convert to get (more or less) what I want. Less generic would be nice… If you are talking about the 1/100 equivalent to Foundry's Sea Dogs line, you may be in for a disappointment. What rules are you contemplating (and therefore, what play scale)? Flashing Blades, Irregular Wars, Spanish Fury: Actions, what? |

Surely there must be a few conquistador lines out there. Try Essex, Miniature Figurines, and Peter Pig (perhaps), to start. I'd love some from the 1650s – 1700s era (or to 1720, at a stretch), if anyone knows of some appropriate for that period [apologies for the hijack, but we are talking piracy here, eh!]. British, Spanish, French, Danish, Dutch, etc. |

Beast Rampant: "If you are talking about the 1/100 equivalent to Foundry's Sea Dogs line, you may be in for a disappointment." That's what I was afraid of. I check every once in a while, but it still looks like no one has given that range a shot in 1/100 (15-18mm). Dan PS. Has anyone here read this?

Grumpy miniatures has a range of colonial portugese that might give you something. |

In 15mm Essex Elizabethans have shot in jack looking just like your pics and officers in fancy gear ditto, drummers and standards no bother. Grumpy are good too as has been said. QRF are worth a look too for halberdiers or shot in floppy hat. Minifigs Tudor command is nice too. The forhcoming Khurasan are brilliant if you want to wait. Me, I'd mix and match as all are compatible. |

I built up a Sea Dogs "army" and a Spanish Colonial "army" from a collection of figures. The Sea Dogs are a mix of QRF's Elizabeth Wars and Tudor Wars ranges, plus some MiniFigs and ERM figures. The Spanish are a mix of MiniFigs, Viking Forge, Khurasan and Grumpy. I am looking forward to adding more variety with Khurasan's upcoming releases. Here are some links to my figures to get an idea:

Prince Albert, That is amazing! I love how well they mix together. I'll start a "Late 16th Century" shopping list immediately. For Elizabethan Sea Dogs: QRF link link Minifigs link ERM link For Spanish and French: Viking Forge link link Essex link Grumpy (via ERM) link Khurasan (can't see the range – he's out on holiday and closes the site in the meantime) khurasanminiatures.tripod.com Thanks, Dan |

Thanks Dan, appreciate the kind words. I forgot to mention that Black Hat (formerly Gladiator Games) have some figures in their range that would work for Spanish (I believe some of my pike are Black Hat). There are some size differences with some of the figures but once painted and based I don't see why they can't go together. |

Sounds like a darned good deal! Dan, your early-posted pics were more an irregular or seaman sort. I'm glad you are happy with what you've been presented with, and get you off and running. Enjoy this great period! |

Thanks! I'll have to give the Black Hat ones a look also: link The greater the variety the better, as long as the bodies are compatible. Thanks again guys, Dan PS. I completely forgot that I had some Grumpy figures from one of their Asian ranges. The detail on those was excellent: TMP link |
