Does anyone have a good source of information on this or indeed any information!! I've had a look at some pictures on the Net of the 1863 Polish Uprising and there seem to be some in picklehaubes and the round flat forage caps and some in kepis. I fancy doing a bit of imagi-nation fighting between Russians and 1866 Austrians and Prussians.

A new French style uniform was approved by Nicholas I in 1855, A tunic and shako replacing the old coatee and spiked helmet in the infantry. In 1864 a cloth kepi for other ranks was introduced by Alexander II. However the Guard regiments as well as Pan-Slavist elements in the army, opposed the new 'foreign style' on principle. Many regiments retained the furashka or forage cap and the kepi was never fully adopted.

This was a period of change in the Russian army, and as would be expected kepis, furaskas and shakos would all feature in any campaign force. Probably with a preponderance of the furashka.

And a new "Slavic" uniform was authorized in 1876, but only the Guards and some of the Rifles wore it in the Turkish War.
