Hi, is there a book out there that is a good general overview of the predreadnought age and the navies of the period, not just the Royal Navy? Something reasonably scholarly would be good. |

Maybe not exactly what you requested – War at Sea in the Ironclad Age by Richard Hill, 2000; one of the Cassell History of Warfare series. It covers naval warfare from the advent of armored warships in the 1850s through the Russo-Japanese War. Chapters include The Technical Background, Navies and Their People, Theories of Sea Warfare, The American Civil War, Navies and Imperial Expansion, and Fleet Action. Hope this helps. Jim link |

If you'd like a book just about the US Navy, I'd recommend "The Age of the Battleship: 1890-1922" by Brayton Harris. |

The Warshipsw and Navies of The World 1880, by J.W.King. Originally published on the date intimated, but my edition is a 1982 reprint by Conway. Just over 600 pages, with drawings, tables, etc. |

King is a good book, but, as the date indicates, is more about ironclads than predreadnoughts. |

Jeeves, I've read that one and it was a good read, although very anglo-centric from memory. It does, however, have quite a few factual errors that I spotted (things like top speed of ships) that make me hesitant. |
