I'm toying with a post apocalypse/alien invasion game using a mix of 20mm modern as survivors (mostly Chechens I think). I want to use 20mm, partly to try it as a scale and also so I can modify HO scenery. I imagine small groups holding out among the ruins of the world.

I only plan for this to be a 20-30 minis and a wee bit of terrain project.

My idea is for the invading aliens to be bigger – not Titan size but big.

I've married it down to either high tech – GW Tau Stealth Suits (plastic versions). These'll stand about twice the height of a man.

The other thought is to use GW Tyranid tyrant guards as a sort of big bug style aliens.

Does anyone have any size comparisons of those two against 20mm minis? Are there any other Rangers I'm not thinking of that are fairly scale neutral and would work as big versus 20mm?

Funny. I have done the exact same thing. I used Tau as big aliens (Darghaur from Tomorrow's War), 20mm modern military and militia as humans and Khurasan Felids as smaller alien slave races.

I'll see if I can make some comparative pictures tomorrow.

Great, thanks. I'm really taken with the idea of the aliens being bigger – the trick will be to not simply make it look like 2 scales on one table (which I know it is really!!!).

Either option should work, though I'd suggest the 'Nids. Crisis suits are stupid-expensive on a good day.

If you base them the same way you base your 20mm minis, it should not look like the minis are two different sizes. You might need to go to a larger diameter base, but a 3/16x1" fender washer or whatever works just find under a 28mm model getting used as a battlesuit in 15mm, when I base my 15s on pennies or 1/8x3/4" fender washers.

Thanks yeah, that's a good shout – for the 20's I'll be basing on 20mm round bases (y'know, the black plastic ones – I use them for 15's too) anyway so if the nids are on 25/30mm bases it'll all marry up.

The more I play with the idea the more I like it – a rag tag group of militia made from Underfire Miniatures Chechens versus some larger aliens, possibly tyrant guardS though I'd be interested in seeing some tau against them. I really like Underfire's Rhodesian's too, so there's always scope for a bush/jungle version as well but one thing at a time!

Here are some comparative shots. Left a Khurasan Felid (Small Alien), in the middle a Caesar 1/72 plastic modern in the first picture and a RH Miniatures metal battle armoured trooper in the second and a plastic GW Tau on the right (Big Alien).

As you can see the similar basing brings it together and the differences in size only emphasize the non-humans being alien.

That's great cheers – you're right, they just look like very tall aliens which suits the 'war is already lost' concept I've got for this.

Thanks for that.

Great minds blah blah….…..I have Tau troopers and a selection of 'alien' figures to battle in the ruins of Earth……….all ' Battle LA'……..I am still searching for a heavy weapons platform/walker for the Tau…………..

This one maybe?

It's from the Dark Dream set.

Does anyone know how Khurasan's 15mm Intruders work against 20mm? They're supposedly very tall.

Citizen Kenau-any more details-Dark Dream set? Not familiar with that…..it looks pretty close to what I'm after!

For 'slave race' I have some 15 mm 'golem' type humanoid from 15 mm.co.UK

Talking of 15mm.co.uk, my Underfire order arrived today and the Prang look OK against them as squat-toad aliens, although the style is quite different.

Anyway – I mostly solo game skirmishes and find that multi-use figures are often the best. So to go back to this topic – are there any slim, district 9ish, man sized aliens in 28mm? They must have reversed knees as these wil chime with some other bits I've got my eyes on.

Any ideas?
