link Fleet vs. earthworks "Porter brought the fleet close to shore and opened fire. Over the next five hours, his 627 guns discharged approximately 10,000 rounds — something like 115 a minute — directly onto the embracing, forgiving sands of Fort Fisher. The mighty discharge of ordnance resulted in one confederate dead, 22 injured, and two guns disabled. The fort's comparatively puny reply — 622 shells — left 83 of Porter's men dead or wounded." |

A great, really great, book on Fort Fisher is: Confederate Goliath: The Battle of Fort Fisher $5 USD at Amazon. Good easy flow of reading covering the 2 attacks on the fort. Col Lamb during the second attack is leading assault groups to recapture lost gun positions, pistol and sabre in hand. Real gutsy stuff. Lots of game options in the two attacks, I won't spoil any of the what if surprise. Ran a few scenarios in 15mm with Johnny Reb II years ago. |

That's a grest book. My granddad's uncle was one of the Brunswick Artillrymen (a kid really) captured there and died at Elmira. The part where they reversed the guns to attempt to repel the union is inspiring stuff. |

I have visited Fort Fisher twice. The small part of the fort still standing is the part that was taken in the first rush during the second attack. Quite a formidable work. Back in 1999 a restaurant nearby featured a pecan pie dessert listed as "Col. Lamb's pie – the Yankees got the Col. but not his pie". My comment was considering the small slice and the big price, no wonder the Yankees left it. During the recent movie "Lincoln", the President and his staff wait by the telegraph as reports of the fighting for Fort Fisher come in. |

Yeah, I lived in Wilmington NC for a while. The Ocean keeps eroding the coast and much of the Fort is underwater. The Parts they have for tours and the walk itself are quite interesting. That and the BB North Carolina were awesome attractions that I was able to visit many, many times. |
