From reading the rules, even the author admits these can be a bit complicated.

So, is anyone still using these for their Cold War battles, and has come up with a more elegant solution for infantry vs. infantry, and/or combined arms actions with infantry supported closely by vehicles.

The whole total up all the firepower points for each side, then determine the total length of the other side's forces, and divide that by the points (or vice versa), or roll off randomly for units affected doesn't appear to be very player friendly.

Otherwise, it appears to be a decent system, using D20s for To-Hit resolution. I like the granularity of that, since you can represent the effects of range quite effectively for a variety of weapons, and fire control systems.

Thoughts?

If you like them look around for Challenger, an earlier set that's similiar but simpler. Or go to Gamecraft miniatures for a copy of Tacforce. slick set of rules by GHQ and GDW.

We went on to C2 after playing the WRG nodern set (the one with the T62 on the cover, not he "revised" more complicated version which tok all the fun out of the game and ruined it). Went back to the WRG set once e realused what a soul destroying experience C2 was.

I still play Challenger/Challenger II/Challenger 2000 with a small group of friends. I modify a lot of things for playability and taste, and almost always play double-blind with a referee. I haven't found a better simulation.

The game can be overly complicated and detailed, but found I could mitigate the drag on the game through preparation. Whether you're firing tank on tank or SAM at an aircraft you have dozens of modifiers to consider and a few tables to consult, but resolving that one combat is much simpler than it initially appears. I've found creating quick reference tables which support the scenario you're playing reduces complexity and saves an enormous amount of game time. It has taken me hours to create these screnario specific quick reference tables, but it saves me at game time and the quick reference tables are reusable and easily modified.

We started with Challenger 2 and that didn't work out well. Then my group went to Challenger 2000; thought that might be an improvement. Boy, did we ever get that one wrong… The game is solid but is agony to play. Finally gave up and went back to an old copy of the original WRG rules. Have since gone to Fist Full of Tows and never looked back.
