It has been several months since I completed a ship. For some reason I developed a modeling block. It's over now and here is the ship.

I searched through your blog but could not find a post on making the sails, as you do for this model.

Could you provide a link on how you decide the various sail dimensions? Perhaps where you purchase the material used for them?

Or a pointer to that information that my doleful skills failed to find?

Yes, quite nice, but unfortunately that link does not provide me with the information.

dragon6,

This post shows a bit about how I am doing sails now:

As for measurements, I have measured the sails, spars, and masts from minis of small craft up to 1st rates and kept the info in a "Mast Log". These include Langton, GHQ, Navwar, and Davco models. Now I just order hulls and build the rest. If I want to do a small frigate, I just look up similar small frigates I have recorded in the log and duplicate the sails.

Thank you. An interesting solution but one that requires great expertise, such as you demonstrate.

Your models inspire me and surely many others.

Thanks for the nice words dragon6, but it really isn't difficult. It was just trial and error until I came up with an easy method. I would be happy to share pages from my mast log. Just let me know what size ship you are working on and I will email you the appropriate pages.

Wondeful work. But doesn't the backdrop detract from the model?

Beautiful ship Vol. The studding sails look fantastic. I'd agree your modeling block is very much over.

Gorgeous work Vol, and a magnificent display of sail. Very glad to see the results of the end of your modeling block.

Thanks guys. This was the longest block I've ever had. I was really starting to get concerned. It is deffinitely gone though. I already have HMS Defence ready to rig. :)

And Merry Christmas everyone!

Vol,
A little bit of me thinks I would like a block too, if you get to do such lovely models after it.
I stand in your shadow and look on with a open mouth.
Be safe
Rory
