Has anyone got any suggestions for the composition of a 2000point Wab army for either Macedonians or Persians? Colin |

Umm, Aren't the official Alexandrian Conquest and Imperial and Archaemenid Persian lists in the Armies of Antiquity supplement? What's wrong with these? There's also an alternative Alexandrian Imperial list at: link You might also look at: inisfail.com/~ancients |

Colin, I dont blame you for asking. I am having a bear of a time putting together a list from WAB. Too many goodies with too many restrictions. I've had a hard time finding decent reference on levies and how they were used. I hope someone has some constructive input to this. I noticed noone runs up army lists here for input, is this taboo on this site? Or are we all beyond this? |

Rogcollectibles asked both here and on a previous thread about Persian levies. For later Achaemenids, those contemporary with Alexander, I've been lucky to see what Jeff Jonas has been doing with the Persian list for his Alexander supplement for WAB. So I've been going two routes: using Old Glory's levy spearmen and archers for Persian-looking types; and picking up Newline's unit packs of East Iranians and Babylonians for "ethnic" types. Newline also makes Kappadokian and Lykian infantry which can supplement a Persian satrap from Asia Minor. I like having a variety from which to pick and choose. Oh yes, Jeff also uses the Asiatic archers from Navigator's Successor range. For earlier (Cyrus, Xerxes) Persian armies, the larger levy contingents are not yet comprehensively covered by newer 25/28-mm ranges of figures. A lot can be approximated by using Persian figures in Median dress: Bactrians, Sogdians, etc., even though some details might differ. This again is where the Old Glory levies and archers come in useful, and are inexpensive. But in many cases, what "distinguishes" the appearance of various national contingents is based on what is interpreted from a limited set of depictions in ancient art, and sometimes is only guesswork. Until Jeff's Alexander supplement is released, hopefully early next year, the Armies of Antiquities list works OK. It helps to have an historical order of battle to choose from some of the more flexible options. You could also ask around on the WABList Yahoo group, or on the Warhammer Players Society historical forum. There are quite a few Persian players in the US and UK who would probably be happy to offer ideas from their own armies. Allen

I agree that at 2000 pts you can't have everything you want. I play a Carhaginian army and can hardly squeeze in all the allies and mercenaries. One option may be to use 15mm figures (which we do for Crusades). Using DBM basing and cnverting distances from inches to cm, the battlefield becomes believeable. Check out the game we played at: napnuts.tripod.com/dory01.htm Compare it with doing it in 20mm: napnuts.tripod.com/wab_14jul.htm |

Here's a 2000 Macedonian list meant to represent a Seleucid Successor Army: 1 General, mtd, lt armor, sh, barding 1 SB, mtd, lt armor, sh, barding 1 unit of 8 Shock Cavalry, lt armor, sh, barding 3 units of 25 Regular Phalanx infantry, lt armor, sh 2 units of 13 Peltasts, javelin and shield 1 unit of 12 Thracians, Rhompia, javelin and shield Use the Phalanx infantry to pin enemy units (usually other infantry). The Shock cavalry (with the General and SB included in the unit) are used to attack weak points (flanks etc). Elephants are best utilized to drive off enemy cavalry. They can also be useful to attack formed units of infantry (not phalanxes). Peltasts can be used to take out enemy bow armed skirmishers or to screen the elephants advance from enemy skirmishers. Thracians are great for taking out any enemy skirmishers.

Whitemetalman, As a someone who is putting together a Carthaginian army, I am curious as to your choice of number of figures per unit. Why 25-fig Phalanx? And what formation (how many wide, how many deep) do you use them in? I've organised by phalanxes 4 deep to benefit from the rank bonus. And 13 peltasts? Is that for luck? Not taking the piss here; just want to know. Really.
