"Photos of Kusten Canal and Edewecht in 1945 " Topic

The club is going to do the battle at the Kusten Canal, 17-19 April 1945, in 28mm. Does anyone have any good sources for images of the area prior to the battle. The end of the war was destructive and it's been pretty heavily developed afterwards.

We did find some books on eBay.de and at German libraries but we're looking for any online archives of city plans or landscapes. At least until we can dig up some long lost relative to go to Munich and get the books we need.

You have probably seen this reference already, but just in case it is the "Victory Campaign" by Stacey and page 560 contains Sketch 46 which shows the Canadian advance up to and across the canal covering a 5000 x 4000 yard area. Not super detailed but the image does show the road and rail layout and locations of buildings (only dots mostly). Here is the link to the on-line Hyperwar site for Victory Campaign.

Sorry, but I have no photos myself. How big of a board are you planning for 28mm?

Thanks, I did find that map previously. In the end that may be what we go with. The buildings in that region have such a distinctive look, though, and I'd love to do some exact matching. There's also mention of thick hedges and again it would be nice to know what the area looked like at the time.

We are "discussing" the ground scale, I like 1:1 but that may not fly. The game will be on a 6x8 board or so. I'm guessing we will run two games- one a scramble to form a bridgehead and then another to fend off the counterattack.

Such a strange period though, with Allied troops slogging along and completely variable levels of resistence. And in this setting apparently a tough fight.

How did the game go?

I'm currently working on a project for 4 Canadian Armoured Division in April 1945. So any information on how this game ran would be greatly appreciated.
