… Cavalry in the Civil War. "This is the untold story of the heroic efforts of the men of the 4th United States Cavalry as they sabered their way through the Western Theater of the Civil War and into the heart of the Confederacy. From the earliest battles in Missouri at Dug Springs and Wilson's Creek, to Fort Donelson and Shiloh, Tennessee, and on to the great Battle of Chickamauga Creek, Georgia, where they delayed the advance of the Confederate Army for ten hours at Reed's Bridge, the regiment not only fought on Southern soil, but faced the best cavalry leaders the Confederacy had to offer, including Nathan Bedford Forrest. From the siege of Atlanta and Kilpatrick's Raid around the city, to the final great cavalry charge at Selma, Alabama, the 4th United States earned a reputation second to none as they became the Masters of the Field." Tango 01 – This is good stuff. Do you know of any other information about which Union cavalry regiments were considered to be the best? I would suppose that all the regiments in the Michigan brigade would be considered as some of the best. I am particularly interested in the other cavalry regiments that served in the Western Theater. |

From what I've read Minty's cavalry brigade was considered by many to be the elite cavalry brigade in the Army of the Cumberland, and probably the western theater (for the Union). It was composed of the 4th US, 4th Michigan, and 7th Pennsylvania. It even had the nickname of The Saber Brigade. I suppose the Lightning Brigade could be counted in there, but they were technically Mounted Infantry, and proud of it. They were in the same division during the Atlanta Campaign. |
