Having visited the Derivan factory this year, I am compelled to remind wargamers that there are Austrailan Paint manufacturers.
Whilst they do not now, manufacture products that directly address our needs, there are often times we paint terrain etc. that do not need the model paints we usually use.
I might recommend Derivan background colours as a range for broad areas. If there is an option, Artist Spectrum, Chromacryl, Derivan and Global are brands with an Australian factory. Please consider spending that extra few dollars to support these organisations. Or not….it's a free country.
If I've obmitted other manufacturers, my apologies.

I paint figures (mainly 1/72 plastic figures) with Derivan Matisse Flow acrylics. And I varnish using their Polymer varnish.

I have a number of these paints on my desk, didn't realise they were local (to me).

I must admit I have not seen or heard of any of these paints. Please let us know where we can get them from locally ( stores /outlets/retailers ? ). I'd be more than happy to support a local Aussie product.
cheers Tom

Tom – Most art supply shops sell Derivan and Chromacryl paints. Not sure about the other brands.

I use both Derivan Matisse & Jo Sonjas artist acrylics for the majority of my miniature painting. I purchase them from an artists supplies store – Riot Art of from Lincraft a fabric sales store that has a craft supplies section.
Unlike cheap craft paints, the Matisse & Jo Sonjas paints have solid pigments & good coverage, they were developed for serious watercolour artists.
They come in a 75ml tube for $8 USD – $9 USD compared to a common wargame paint that are in 17ml bottles for $5 USD-$6 makes them great value.

The downside is that although they have an extensive range of colours, WW2 military colours (Feld Grau, Khaki, olive drab etc) will still have to be purchased from your favourite modeling paint company.

Matisse Derivan Now called Derivan has manufactured fine artist paints in Australia for 50 years.

They also heavily sponsored the Leviathan painting comp back when it use to receive over 100 entries along with the Australian War Memorial when we ran a school ANZAC diorama competition.

From 2001 to 2012 Derivan initially allowed myself and others to promote our hobby at their stall in the Arts and Crafts Pavilion at the Sydney Royal Easter show. From approx 2004 we secured with their help our own display area. This continued long after I left WSGS in 2006, all up we got to spend 10 years over a 11-12 year period promoting our hobby at the Easter show thanks to Derivan.

We were also made welcome at the Derivan Open day and this year marks my 13 year attending and promoting our hobby with participation games and a paint and take table that my cousin and niece run.

The derivan Minis came out of work by myself, Gary Kenworthy, Mark Fenlon and many more. We asked for a very matt paint that could be thinned down for airbrushing.

Unfortunately the then Tinsoldier retail stores objected to the 36ml bottle, they could sell 3 GW paint pots for 1 Derivan Mini and despite the idea that 1 Derivan Mini bottle would save money so people could buy more miniatures, Tinsoldier in Australia at the time would not promote the range. Derivan ended up getting out of the market.

Derivan also donated well over $2,000 USDAU of paint to the WSGS monthly family days. Plus they kept topping up the paints free for as long as they were involved with WSGS. It got to a point where we had more families painting and playing wargames in the class rooms than adult gamers in the common room.

This $2,000 USDAU of paint went "missing" when adult members cleaned up and put the paint into a sea freight container because they never used it. (At the time we had some members at WSGS that were against the use of artist paints in the hobby, they only used hobby paints and despite the generous support given to WSGS these members did not seem to appreciate it and talked down the paints)

In that same month arguments over the family day saw the families leave WSGS and I also left after 29 years with the club.

Matisse Derivan either stopped sponsorship or were not asked back to Leviathan, I am not sure.

Given Matisse Derivan continued to support promoting our hobby at the Easter show and at their open day, it says a lot for there support of our hobby

***
I paint using the Matisse Flow range and the Derivan Minis. I also have the Matisse Background range in Olive and dark olive that I thin out to use for WWII olive and drab olive.

Finally I use a lot of their special products, like drying retardant, surface tension breaker, iridescent medium, ink extended etc

The drying retardant was why I first contacted Matisse Derivan, when I was looking for sponsors for Leviathan. Basically I looked at what was on my desk, wrote down the company names and started making telephone calls.

Derivan have given more to our hobby than they ever got back in sales. The time at the Easter show and at their open day (they do not sell any product at their open day)
promoting our hobby was very generous on their part.

Tiberius,

It's disappointing that local manufacturers like Derivan aren't supported.
I'm afraid wargamers & modelers are a rather conservative lot. Unless the paints are sold by modeling retailers or explicitly state "Model Paints" or similar, no amount of anecdotal evidence will convince the painter that they should try Derivan. Not to mention the value for money side of the issue.
Five times the amount of paint for effectively the same price! More money to spend on miniatures.

Link to 6mm minis & buildings using Derivan Matisse &/or Jo Sonjas paints.

I've used Jo Sonja paints but not Derivan. Checking their website I see that they are (as per usual) not in Darwin; but they are in Alice Springs………..

Edit: less specific search on the website (I.e. remove Darwin) and Darwin comes up!

Hi Tiberius, I well remember the support given by Derivan and the generous sponsorship of the ANZAC diorama event. I still have and use the "left over" Derivan mini paint range and they are a quality paint, as you rightly point out.

Such a pity they couldn't continue making the range while expensive hobby paints walk out of the door.

(btw, hope you are keeping well :) )

Nice guys, the old Boer Brown was a great paint for basing. But being brutally honest they're not as good as the latest paint coming out of Spain. But very good for terrain projects.

Hi StraylightOZ,

I have never forgotten your students sending their dioramas all the way from South Australia to NSW for the ANZAC school Diorama competition

Best wishes Stu, Happy New Year
