I'm trying to build a unit of Russian Napoleonic dragoons in 1/72 plastic. I'm beginning with the HaT set, but they only provide two horse poses. So my plan is to use other horses, with the shabraque made of green stuff.

Now to get the embroidered "A" in the back corner of the shabraque, I'm thinking of making a mold of the HaT shabraque, simply by pouring some two part epoxy over the HaT product, maybe reinforced with a bit of wire. When the epoxy hardens, I hope to be able to pull the epoxy mold off the HaT horse and use it to "stamp" the green stuff on the non-HaT horse.

Has anyone out there tried to do this, or something like it? I'd like to benefit from the mistakes and successes of others before I begin this experiment.

Thanks.

Making molds using softened glue sticks works for smaller things. Discovered this from a show I saw on Youtube. But I wonder if this will work with soft plastic figs.

It's probably easier to 'freehand' the cypher with a paintbrush, rather than sculpt it, to be honest. On 28mm figures it comes out looking like this:

I like to think I'm a pretty good painter, but I don't think I'm THAT good. Getting a consistent size and look on each horse is something I'd rather do mechanically.

Not sure many of us could emulate Greysreak's work.

There us a huge (ish) market for anyone who could come up with transfers (decals) for cavalry shabraque monograms.

Even just white grenades, a white and an aurore imperial crown, a crowned N……a British Royal cypher for George III, OK, we would then want in sliver and gold for officers………but most figures are troopers after all.

Companies have produced such for various infantry units, kilts, waterbottles and back packs. How well would this sell?

Widowson, if you did succeed, your result might well have marketing potential. If it could be done in photo etched brass, you could outperform Apple next year……….
