Just finished watching this, the Russian film.

Pretty good watch. It's not a non-stop action flick like Brest Fortress, though it certainly has some action.

Character-heavy with decently drawn characters on both sides.

The cinematography is pretty interesting, there's some really cool shots (and a really surreal scene near the beginning, if you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about).

Even had a couple tear-jerker moments.

Well worth a watch.

Oh, and since it's a movie made by Germans or Russians (in this case Russians), you'll probably feel pretty miserable afterwards.

Is that the one that looked like "Stalingrad: 300-Style"?

Is that the one that had the ludicrous scene where Soviet soldiers are set on fire but they bravely keep charging the German machine guns?

I turned this off less than halfway through it was so bad. It made 300 look like historical fact…

After seeing "The 9th Company" I wasn't expecting much to begin with either. Heck, even "Enemy at the Gates" is a better film – the only thing it had wrong that this one didn't is the Russian accents…

Paul – yeah, that's the scene I was referring to :)

Completely surreal and weird but I don't think I've ever seen anything like it :)

I liked it a lot better than 9th company which was too weird and esoteric.
As far as historical accuracy goes, eh, that's what books are for. There were Russians and Germans. They fought each other in a city.
That's as much as you need.

I will admit, I liked Enemy at the Gates as well. The characters are compelling even though it's pretty absurd as well.

I've seen some of the Russian's recent offerings. They all have what I have labeled these "Dr. Zhivago" moments, but overly long, drawn out and maudlin. You can have them! YMMV

I wasn't expecting an historical treatise, something having ANYTHING to do with the battle of Stalingrad would have been nice though…

That charging while on fire scene was not a good start I have to admit – it lost me there and it just went downhill after that.

I enjoyed it and gave it a good review: link

It came out right around the time Russia took over the Crimea and I was surprised my local AMC theatre showed it, but it did bomb at the BO.

Saw it through Netflix. See the German movie instead.
