Hello out there,
Can somebody help? I am looking for information about the colours of grenadier caps, especially of Grenadier-Battalion von Minnigerode. It consisted of grenadier companies of fusileer regiments Erbprinz, von Dittfurth, von Knyphausen, and von Lossberg. Two of them had white metal front plates, the other bronze. About the colours of their bags, crowns, and pompons I have not been able to find reliable bits of information. I know the illustrations of 1785 and 1786, and the Funcken illustration.
I would be glad if anybody can tell me.

Do you mean these illustrations? the bags on the grenadier hats are difficult to see but the pompoms are pretty clear.

On the Discover link, shows Hessian Units after their return from the AWI. They show the Knyphausen-Donop Fusilier Regiment and Donop-Knyphausen Musketeer Regiment after they had changed inhabers and traded titles.

Thank you very much. But the illustrations in the links are the ones I mentioned (1785 and 1786). They were drawn after the return of the regiments, and the backs of the grenadier caps are hardly visible. As it looks the crowns are all metal – which they weren't!
I did the grenadier regiment Rall; and discovered two illustrations of caps of an NCO and of a private – and they both show textile crowns!

Obviously the 18th c. artists didn't bother too much about the backs of the caps.

There is a Facebook page called: Kriegsarmaturen that has lots of pictures of Hessian and Prussian grenadier and fusilier mitres, front and back.

According to Uniformen der deutschen Kontingente im Amerikanischen Unabhangigkeitskrieg 1776-1783 nach Frizt Kredel… Volume 2 from 2006:

Erbprinz: white metal; all rose-pink pompom and bag (matching facings) with white lace trim.

Ditfurth: white metal; all yellow pompom and bag (matching facings) with white lace trim.

Knyphausen: brass metal; all white pompom; straw bag with noticeably-whiter lace trim. (Black facings.)

Lossberg: brass metal; reddish-orange pompom and bag with white lace trim. (I'm assuming matching facing colours.)

The illustrations show metal crowns. If you think cloth-crowned ones were used in the AWI, then maybe look through Pengel & Hurt for any descriptions of WAS or SYW ones?

Thank you all. The problem of the crowns has not been solved yet: Prussian military was a model for Hesse-Cassel uniforms, it is said. And all Prussian grenadier mitres of 1786 to be found at the Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin have got textile crowns!

Military Uniforms of the World in Colour by Preben Kannick shows the Hesse-Hanau Erbprinz grenadier for the AWI with the cloth crown!
