Were these as numerous or as well equipped as their Luftwaffe counterparts, or are they more on par with Volkstrurm? Did they fight outside the Norway campaign? I am trying to find a late war unit, slightly better than an stomach battalion, thought these would make a change, if they only really reappear in the defence of Berlin it is back to Luftwaffe. hope that is clear jon |

Hi Jon, There was a thread on this a couple of years back, so try a search. Essentially the only Kriegsmarine fighting units in Normandy were personnel of naval coastal artillery batteries (though many such batteries belonged to the Army, so were manned by Army personnel), as well as small, ad hoc units formed for the defence of places such as Cherbourg and Le Havre. Other battalion-sized naval units started appearing in the front-line as an emergency measure during the defence of the Netherlands in September 1944 (Operation Market-Garden). The first Regimental and Divisional-sized didn't really appear in the front line until the defence of Germany in 1945. The British Army had particularly hard battles against them during the advance on Hamburg. |
