I am trying to understand some organisational details for the Russian army in the Crimea. Looking at some of the OOBs I see references to two jäger organisations; jäger regiments and jäger battalions. Am I correct to assume that the regiments are the equivalent of line infantry regiments – jäger in name only, but the jäger battalions are the equivalent of light infantry? |

Hmm now I am not a specialist but the 1877 army had rifle battalions as an addition to a brigade, and also rifle brigades. Diffrent war and diffrent army true, but leads me to hypothesize that there were jager regiments , which were indeed light infantry. But I will defer to those who know better. |

In 1854 a Russian Division consisted of two brigades of infantry – one of 2 regiments of musketeers and one of two regiments of Jaegers. The difference was in uniforms only. There were three Divisions in a Corps. There was only one Rifle Battalion per Corps. Russian Corps organisation at the time was very consistent on paper at least. Hope this helps |
