"According to pictures relayed last Friday by the Globo network, the Embraer KC-390 prototype made its first turn at low speed on the runway of Gaviao Peixoto, at the operational headquarters of Embraer Defesa & Segurança. This first test seems to announce the maiden flight of the aircraft, scheduled for the end of the year, and confirming the timetable announced on October 21, during the deployment ceremony. This test was performed for the initial assessment of the ground operation on the engines, embedded systems, trains, brakes, vibration and basic handling of the aircraft. The first KC-390 – among 30 ordered, including the two prototypes – could be delivered to the Brazilian Air Force during the second half of 2016…"

That is a nice-looking bird. IIRC, it's the size of a C130 or so, and is a good bit faster. If it wasn't for a bajillion used C130s in the world, I'd bet the KC390 would have a LOT of buyers. |

Not to mention Russian Antonovs. |

On the flip side, the C-130 airframe is 60 years old and unit cost is $30 USD million for new ones. The C-17 is $200 USD million. This Embraer is projected to be around $50 USD million, so that might appeal to countries that can't swallow the cost of the C-17. |

World's running out of used C-130s and what's left is often flogged to death and needs extremely costly upgrades and rebuilds. KC-390 already has orders/commitments from following: Argentina (6) Brazil (28) Chile (6) Colombia (12) the Czech Republic (2) Portugal (6). Sweden has shown an interest. Not to mention Russian Antonovs. Again not many left. Most are flogged to death. Anyone with cash is replacing them with C-295 or C-27J. The Soviets never had a big fleet of them in the first place. Only exception is India which is upgrading theirs. Second hand Il-76s are also getting harder to come by. |
