I have noticed that while very few of us sculpt our own figures (although there are a few, most of whom seem to reside in Nottinghamshire) many of us make our own terrain, while others do not.

So what is your prefered attitude toward terrain?

A) I prefer to build my own
B) I prefer to purchase kits that I assemble and paint myself
C) I prefer to purchase assembled but unpainted terrain that I paint myself
D) I prefer to buy already finished terrain
E) other or some combination of the above. Please explain.

cfielitz15 Dec 2014 11:10 a.m. PST

A. Even if it looks cruddy, I get a sense of accomplishment from making it.

Dynaman878915 Dec 2014 11:11 a.m. PST

E

Buildings I buy, other items I will buy or try to make.

Tommy2015 Dec 2014 11:23 a.m. PST

D. I barely have enough time to paint my figs.

Rrobbyrobot15 Dec 2014 11:34 a.m. PST

I like to make my own buildings and such. But I'll also buy kits and add interior floors and more substantial roofs. I'm referring to HO scale buildings in the last sentence.
But I'm very fortunate in that I have a friend who enjoys making his own 28mm buildings but hasn't the space to keep them all. So I 'help' him by giving those he wants to be rid of a nice home.
If you find yourself with not enough space. Or if you'd just like to be rid of some troublesome figures or terrain please feel free to contact me through this venue. Robby's Home For Wayward Wartoys is always ready to help. wink

D – I agree with Flintloque. The time I spend on terrain takes away anytime I have for getting figures done.

D, perferably. But on occasion I have done all of the above.

Old Contemptibles15 Dec 2014 12:58 p.m. PST

D.

E. I have some I made and I have some I bought and painted. I have some that were finished, painted and ready to go. I prefer them completely finish.

E. I enjoy printing and building my own cardstock terrain.

Mako1115 Dec 2014 1:59 p.m. PST

A mostly, but B – D also apply, depending upon the items, costs, and my skill.

If I were rich, which I'm not, I'd buy everything predone, and only build/paint the occasional item, so I could spend more time gaming. Sadly, that is not possible.

Build my own.

Much more satisfying.

Build my own, I like them in scale and 98% of the pre-made buildings are to small (foot print) and too costly.

altfritz15 Dec 2014 2:38 p.m. PST

I played in a game once where one of the other players complained that the terrain was getting in the way!

(It was 40K and I had set up the terrain like a WW2 battlefield in Normandy.) :-)

Wackmole915 Dec 2014 2:55 p.m. PST

E. Depends on the piece and if i really need it right now.

E.

If I can find what I want all finished at a price I like, I buy it. If not, I try to find either a kit or a finished resin piece I can just paint and do groundwork for.

But sometimes, I just make it myself such as rice paddies. I saw no commercial ones that looked realistic. Also double canopy jungle and log stage coach stations and cabins for the West in the 1860s-70s.

Did my own roads to work for graveled two lane roads in Vietnam or metalled roads in the Civil War.

I have to make my own 'bad guy" bunkers for SE Asia too.

A, though I will use bits and bobs of proper kits in the construction…

ordinarybass15 Dec 2014 4:09 p.m. PST

E, but a derivative of A
I make most of my sci-fi terrain out of second hand toys and other junk that I often cut apart, reassemble, convert, etc. Some need little more than a few bits here and there and some have to be massively reworked. It varies alot.

When I do use a kit, it's usually something basic like Dust Tenements or Pegasus Gothic buildings where they are the starting point from which I usually do alot of additional work and conversion. I rarely do any strict scratchbuilding (construction from raw materials) though. Usually it's just alot of cutting and reassembly.

My approach to terrain is almost all taken from Necromundicon (now ironhands.com) , but you can see alot of my stuff here: chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com

A Build my own but end up selling most of my buildings to finance my hobby. I end up using paper buildings on my own table.

If I can buy something painted/completed that is of high quality and would match what I could build that is what do.

Same goes for unpainted kits.

Time is at a premium for me so game ready terrain is the first thing I look at.

I used to be a mix of A B and C

Now I think there's a lot of merit in D.

It's the time trade-off thing.

Martin Rapier16 Dec 2014 12:15 a.m. PST

Build my own but buy trees and buildings.

Weasel21 Dec 2014 12:48 p.m. PST

Mixture but I've bought quite a few pieces.

138SquadronRAF21 Dec 2014 1:17 p.m. PST

Trees prebuild from European model railway sources.

Building – mostly paper kits.

Field defences etc, scratch built.

F) My pal, the Terrain God, makes nearly all our terrain.

Old Contemptibles16 Jan 2015 11:23 p.m. PST

A – I build hills only when I cannot make a certain hill with my Geo-Hex. The ones I build are usually for 28mm figs, so the hills are very large and finding the space to store them when I am not using them is a bit of a challenge.

D – I buy already finished terrain when I can find them and they look right. I love Miniature Building Authority. I have a lot of pre-painted stuff I bought before Tactical Conflict Systems (TCS) went under. Really great stuff, rivers, field works, bridges etc. I have a lot of buildings, bridges etc., which I painted myself. I have some finished palm trees from Hovel. They are really nice and look great on the game table.

E – I was fortunate enough to acquire several of the very large Geo-Hex kits before Geo-Hex went under. That plus some good game mats gives me a good foundation to work with.
